Come on, maaaan. Help a brother out.

For those of us too bored to do our own research, what's wrong with Open Office? Besides not being a Microsoft product, of course.

Ben, sorry it crapped out on you. I'm with you on hating the auto-update. But I guess it's better than the alternative.

I wish I could help, Ben, but I haven't the knowledge. Someone should step up.

For future reference: Save As is your friend. -1, -2,, -3 etc at the end of every session. Um, and the idea of routine backups to an external drive is similarly worthwhile.

Come to think of it, I'm occasionally using NeoOffice -- but for just one project. I needed the ability to have active weblinks in a PDF, and Office:Mac Word doesn't do that.

Just out of curiosity - wich editor are you using ?

Ben, it was a mistake by Open Office (for retrieving an old document) and by you - when you left the program open during an update, which almost always reboots. The update procedure almost always tells you specifically to close all your files.

I don't know enough about Open Office to assist. Try searching for temporary files (.tmp extension or "~" in the filename), with a modified date the same as it was when you saved.

Myself, I prefer SciTE, KWrite, Nano, and Vim for most text editing (in that order); for word processing, AbiWord and LaTeX, depending on whether I need to actually pubilsh it, or if it's just for some tiny thing to send off.

For any word or xls documents I use a windows machine.

For text editing I use different ones depending on what I'm editing for. I use a GUI latex editor when I'm doing that. For programming usually emacs or even gedit.

Well, then you are quite a liar - or said in other words - your comment of being a regular linux user is irrelevant

I also do presentations, notes, word, or spreasheets in windows. Sometimes also latex.

I do programming, etc, and latex in linux.

For work, I use linux far more often then windows.
