I think it is really off of Democrats to see this as some eeefil Republican project. The thing grew very organically and it has not been pushed by the mainstream pro-bailout Republicans. Sure, the very hard core Republicans signed on (as they went against Bush on the bailout), but guys like Cantor and bloggers like JOM have not been for this thing. It really does have a libertarian edge to it.

Bottom line is people hate the bailouts.

Spending trillions of dollars to bailout counterparties and debt holders doesn't sit well with me. It is loading debt on the American people to pay for very rich people at Goldman Sachs. And most of those guys are actually Democrats. They vote Democrat, but in their personal life do whatever is needed to sheild themselves from taxes, etc.

It's not obvious to me what the numbers actually are. Most of the 170(?) billion blown through by AIG is likely to be recovered, since it's merely collateral on contracts which will probably not pay out.

However, you should note the following:

1) The total debt outstanding held by the GSEs is in the vicinity of 5 trillion
2) These are conforming loans
3) IIRC the amount of accounts in arrears is only 3%

So, there is no way that this amounts to "trillions" of dollars

1) I simply linked to the first major magazine which reported numbers. 2) Sorry but you're the one going through ****** gymnastics not me. 3) The GOP & its cohorets did spend hundreds of millions just counting Fox's 2 months of 24/7 air time promoting it especially when you include the costs of months of payments to two major GOP lobbying groups. 4) Their stated goal was "to cause a revolution and to end the tax and spending". Did that get accomplished? No, so they failed their stated goal. Yes, they did get publicity but that was not their publically stated goal and even a slow wit like you can figure that out. 5) If I'm a hack then you're also a hack because you've never found a right wing event you didn't love.
