    • At the Greenville SC Tea Party last night, via Palmetto Scoop, an estimated 3,000 people booed and heckled GOP Rep. Gresham Barrett, who supported both the trillion-dollar TARP and now supports the trillion-dollar porkulus package. The crowd blew air horns as he tried to speak. Do you think the politicians are getting the message yet? And do you think someone in the MSM might grow up, stop wallowing in sexual teabagging jokes, and report these newsworthy developments? The anger at reckless spenders in Washington is palpable, deep-seated, bipartisan, nationwide, and not going away:

          • In Oerdin's rush to mock these protests he misses something very important. This is a proto-fascist movement.

            • I'm thinking that being mad that the government is bailing out companies is... not really fascist.

True, but so far they don't really have a coherent ideology besides "taxes bad, grrr," which I think you'll agree doesn't count.

Still, it seems like a better time than not to watch Meet John Doe.

                  • Well, the fascists didn't really have a coherent ideology at first, either. In any event, I said it's a proto-fascist movement, i.e., it's not fascist yet, but it has the potential.

You might want to watch 1900. Donald Sutherland plays a much better fascist than his son.

To protest against other corporations? It seems one of the common threads is an anti TARP undercurrent. Where Republican politicians who backed TARP were roundly booed.

                      • The GOP, to its credit, is not a fascist party, rhetoric of people like Oerdin to the contrary. And yes, corporations will fund fascists to put pressure on, and even crush, other corporations.

                        • Sorry, it's just not passing the smell test for me. Were there some proto-fascists there? Most probably. But I don't see the entire movement as a proto-fascist movement.

The right wing tea bagging movement has pretty much been an epic fail despite the hundreds of millions GOP big whigs dumped into it and the tens of thousands of hours of free air time over four months that Fox Noise used to promote this rather gayly named "movement". What's next for the GOP and the fringe groups who still follow it? Clearly this hasn't gotten any traction.
I haven't bothered reading the rest of this thread, but I would bet that there were easily 25k people in TX alone protesting. I didn't go to one, considered to see what was going on, but I know there were small rallies all over the place, not just in the big cities.

I'm not sure what "failed" means in this context, anyway.
