If nothing shows up that is identifiable as a Higgs, my prior is that there is simply a Higgs decaying to slightly non-standard (and difficult to see) particles.

Because there aren't really very many alternatives to SOMETHNG that looks like the Higgs. And least, none that we've come up with.

Clearly, the Higgs must, in addition to its known must-have properties, have the quality of being unobservable -- probably due some clever modulation of spin, phase and magnetic pholgiston. They won't detect it with the LHC, which will then stand as proof of its existence.
