If you don't like the idea of constitutions overruling regular laws then perhaps you should decide to live in a place where they don't have constitutions.
Perhaps we should have a different word for a man having a male "boyfriend" than we do for a woman having a male boyfriend.
Don't we already?
Significant Other.
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.
I am fine with constitutions overruling regular laws.
I don't agree with the reasoning of those who say that it should be legal for constitutional reasons.
It isn't an equal rights thing. There is no right to be married/etc in the constitution. Marriage is a set of benefits that the government grants as it sees fit. It doesn't grant it to polygamists. It doesn't grant it to some other situations. It hasn't granted it between two men/two women. It is perfectly within it's right to decide which things should receive the benefits, and which shouldn't. I think that it would be best for society for the government to grant those benefits to homosexuals who choose to marry their SOs.
I support gay marriage because I think it is best to have it. Not because it should be legal because of the constitution/etc.

Restricting marriage to one man/one woman is not discrimination.

I have never heard it used for anything other than a longterm, male homosexual relationship.

People are in serious need of a HOBBY. KH, don't you have something to scratch? That will have to suffice as a hobby for you.

It is used all the time in corporate situations. It is a politically correct word to refer to anyone's spouse, regardless of gender.

Eh. There's a large body of judges who think that the state/federal constitutions do support marriage as a right. My guess is that they feel that the gov't is not allowed to deny benefits to a certain class of people (as disallowing gay marriage does) without some compelling reason, and that in this case the compelling reason does not exist (or is not explicitly stated in the law).
If the gov't was free to disallow anybody from getting married that it pleased then there would be no problems with disallowing interracial marriage (the prohibitions against which I believe were removed in several cases through court rulings).
Why does "partner" not suffice? It works a treat if the husband/wife doesn't wear a wedding ring, if they're single, or if you're not sure whether they're single or not. They'll tell you if they're single, and you won't have offended them if they're not.
Slowwy, you're such a cute little thing. It's so funny the way you constantly get into discussions in which you're obviously outclassed.
Look! I'm trying to help you. You could at least behave in a civil manner.
