He was impeding the police line and was forcibly moved out of the way. His death is a result of his own actions.

Can a "bystander" be anything other than innocent? Can people at a crime scene or venue who are innocent be anything other than "bystanders?" I think the terminology is redundant.

As to police involvement in the man's death, unless the cops have actually developed that heart-attack machine Bob Dylan calls out about in "Desolation Row," then heart attacks aren't caused by other people's volition. His own body betrayed him in a crisis.

In UK law it's probably manslaughter depending on whether a coroners inquest determines the assault caused his death.

A school friend of mine hit a guy in a bar, who later died in his sleep apparently as a result, that was manslaughter.

From the video, it looks like he intends to impede the police. How many people who see police in riot gear approaching meander slowly along looking for squirrels?

Actually, it looks like he has a stiff leg and was limping.

It may be possible that the heart attack and the assault weren't connected, but it's also possible that they were. The stress of an assault can cause you to have an heart attack.

In any event, there was no good reason for the police to have hit him and pushed him to the ground.

The video was an example of damn sloppy civil disturbance unit work first; second, the officer probably didn't need to knock the guy down, but Mr. Tomlinson walking with his hands in his pockets with his back facing the cops in the middle of a civil disturbance would, IMHO, constitute at least reasonable suspicion to believe that he could have something in his pocket that could pose a threat.

Did he really earn a CDU baton massage? Probably not, but it depends on how the Met handles use of force in riot situations; Was it a criminal act? Probably not. If this was the U.S., I'd have a hard time seeing how there's criminal intent here. A horrible accident where the victim's family would own the city in civil court? Probably. A violation of Department guidelines? Probably. Could get you fired? Quite possibly.

I'm impressed he got in the way just on his walk home from work. When I was walking by that way (I pass the Bank everyday to and from work) the whole area was blocked off by police and I had to walk a detour. Only people reasonably there were protesters, reporters and other involved persons... Staff in the buildings around the area were told not to leave the buildings.

He's walking with his hands in his pockets so he cant be accused of throwing rocks, molotov cocktails, etc. This burk was an old-pro at civil disturbance who was trying to provoke a police response (which unfortunately he did).
