    The really interesting part is
The companies also said they intended to cooperate on the development of “electric vehicles, parts and production system and engineering support.”
It looks like Toyota and Tesla will be releasing a car or two together in the future and possibly making them in the NUMMI plant. This will be a huge help to Tesla in expanding their range if they get to rebrand Toyota bodies using Tesla electric motors and battery packs. It also opens the door to Tesla expanding into the hybrid market using Toyota's hybrid engines.

Tesla also still has the agreement with Daimler in place which they signed last year. http://money.cnn.com/2009/05/19/news...n=money_latest

Sadly, production of the Model S won't start for another year and then the car will be released as a 2012 model.

Given their recent phantom acceleration recall (and associated accusations of corporate foot-dragging on the issue), Toyota has the most ironic marketing slogan in existence.

I can't believe they keep using it.

Not sure this is the kind of association Tesla wants, but $50MM is pretty long green for a high-risk venture like this.

To bad Toyota didn't invest back in January. Last January Tesla did an IPO where the total company's value was only $100 million but it's gone up considerably since then and will likely have over a billion dollar market cap now that the Toyota deal has been announced. Tesla has only sold around 1000 cars so far but they do have an good business advising Daimler on their electric car efforts plus they have a fully functioning state of the art electric drive train and two great models of electric cars and now they have the backing of Toyota. This could be the first successful launch of a new American car company since Kaiser was launched in 1945.

Unless Daimler has sold its shares over the last year the German automaker still owns 10% of Tesla so with Toyota that's some serious establishment support. http://techcrunch.com/2009/05/19/tes...er-investment/

Tesla hasn't done an IPO yet.

Hmm, that article says they filed for an IPO back in January. Does that mean they filed but didn't pull the trigger?

They haven't done the IPO yet. The filing will continue to be revised until the IPO happens.

Further, they are raising $100 million in the IPO. But the market capitalization (i.e., value) of the company is and was vastly more than $100 million.

I'd buy that too... if it will be available in Europe... just put the car in the garage, plug it in overnight (on cheap electricity ~ about the same as quoted US price) and ready for almost 500km trip... for Europe that's plenty, I rarely if ever do that locally in a day, so it would be a perfect car to get around...

When this goes mainstream we will have to have parking lots as filling up stations...

A lot of parking lots in Sweden already have power.

New info on the Toyota Tesla alliance. Toyota is now saying they will also make a Toyota brand electric car in the NUMMI factory along side the Tesla models. I'm not sure if that means Toyota will rebadge Tesla models or if Toyota will be making its own electric car which Tesla will be able to rebrand as a Tesla as well. I suspect it will be the later. This is great news for the bay area as it means the region's only auto factory will be reopening and some of the old workers will in fact get their jobs back plus this may save several of the supplier factories in the area which were also scheduled to be shut down.

False. It will never top "Have you driven a Ford lately?"

I always read that as "Sure we used to suck, but not anymore!"

But Sweden sucks so it doesn't count. Do they even have roads? I thought they got around on skis.

A storied auto factory in Northern California called NUMMI will be reopened in 2012 by Toyota and Tesla to manufacture electric cars. Toyota says it will invest $50 million in Tesla to collaborate on the construction of a new electric vehicle.

The current speculation is that Toyota wants to build both an electric and a hybrid version of the Toyota Corolla in the NUMMI plant which would mean Tesla's 3rd car would be based on the Toyota Corolla platform. That does give them a practical low cost platform but I'm not sure how that would jive with the luxury car image Tesla has been trying to cultivate.

Oerdin: They can speculate all they want, but I don't think it's productive (may raise false hopes). It sounds like the discussions between Toyota and Tesla are at an early stage -- they are far from any decisions.
