I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

I didn't take it as an afront to our soldiers, personally.Originally posted by Naked Gents Rut View Post

I took it as a criticism of our policy, and one with which I do not entirely disagree. Although, some of it was a bit...

It has become a fairly large issue up here, and his apology may not be accepted. Especially so since neither he nor his confreres will STFU.

Oh, and the longer he talks, the more damage done. His cardinal sin was to appear to be dissing our soldiers. Meanwhile, there is a semi-regular motorcade through Toronto of our sons and daughters who have died in Afghanistan. Four more today, as every talk jock in the country set the sights. Were it any other city in the country, it would not be as much of a story. This is like dissing the NYFD while they are burying their dead.Last edited by notyoueither; March 24, 2009, 00:58.(\__/)

Not going to bother watching the tape. All I can say is that the US media seems very deferential toward the sacrifices of their own soldiers (yes, even in satirical shows) but seems to lack any such sensibilities when it comes to the soldiers of their allies, whose contribution was requested as a result of an attack on US soil and who have been doing a great deal of the work holding down the fort in Afghanistan for the better part of a decade while American adventurism a thousand miles to the west sucked up most of their available men and equipment.

They might particularly want to consider the effect of their antics on public sentiment in allied countries, which is already leaning against any further sacrifices, and what the result of reduced cooperation by those allies will be as it concerns their own soldiers.

Finally, they should think hard about whether or not the US would have been willing to pour much (or most) of its deployable military capacity into a meat grinder for 7 years due to a request stemming from a single terrorist attack on an allied nation.

If the good people over at Fox would like cooperation from their Canadian allies to resemble that of the French or Germans rather than that of the British or Dutch they could have found no better way to accomplish it.

In other words, I find it hard to get offended based on the **** coming out of a FOXer's mouth. But others might not.

 Scratch that.

I do take seriously what a major broadcaster sees fit to turn loose on the airwaves. You might think it is silly. Others see an expression of your culture.

What people see in that clip is disrespect. I'm not bothered by it because I see the target as 40 years of neglect for the Armed Forces. Others are pissed off because they see disrespect to the memory of 120 or so dead soldiers.(\__/)

Let's not get carried away. Canada has provided a great deal to the ISAF operations in Afghanistan, but the U.S. still provides ~10x as many troops and is responsible for a much greater area on the border with Pakistan. The British are also carrying a much greater share of the load.

On a serious note, I'm really surprised that a ~3,000 troop commitment has stretched the Canadian Forces so thin that they would need a year-long breather. I knew the Canadian military was small, but this really drives it home.
