The value is our military presence in Afghanistan is pretty questionable. I think the big lesson from Iraq is not that the Surge was some great success, but that the Anbar Salvation Front was key (a strategy that I was very dubious of). Also genocide, but that kind of defeats the purpose. Much, much more cost effective to devolve power and buy folks off. One reason to have even higher hopes for that kind of strategy in Afghanistan is that you don't have groups competing over localized oil revenues. It looks like we're moving in this direction (i.e. pushing for provincial autonomy), but probably not fast enough.

Drake, I note again that your media figures, even those who are buffoons, have what could almost be deemed reverence (probably feigned) for your men in uniform.

I'm sorry but it isn't as clear as people would like that the Canadian political or media establishment much less the general public actually do respect the sacrifices of thier men in uniform other than feigned outrage when an American comedian makes a joke. If they did, the Sea King fiasco would never have drug on for as long as it did nor would they have let the readiness of thier armed services drop to such an extent that they would need at least a year to recover from deployments.
