You were mostly just being snarky. I give you no credit.

An impressive list as TCO points out however most don't pass serious scrutiny. Since it wasn't your list anyway (I suspect you don't "buy" all those reasons) there is no real need to respond to them individually.
I buy some more than others. I haven't heard any serious scrutiny from you on any of those items, that's for sure. The point is that you are being narrow-minded and simplistic. And Afghanistan particularly does not lend itself to that kind of analysis.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

      Really? This was snarky?

"I appreciate your comment Dan and I admit my comments are more aimed at the handful of Canadian posters still left at this site than the US posters. That said, I think your "motives" would fail any logical examination at this time. I'll leave it to you to say what you think these motives are."

I asked you politely what the motives were as you saw them. You gave me no answer and accused me of something that is clearly not true.

      Nice debate. Thanks.

This was snarky. And false besides, as my little exercise made clear.

        • "Your little exercise..."

What? To avoid a "logical debate"?

I don't know why you have this attitude Dan. I've debated topics with you here in the past and never had this experience. I politely told you my earlier comment that you responded to was more intended for the Canadian posters here. The war was "sold" differently in this country than in yours. I then asked what the motives were as you saw them (from the US perspective). I find few of the arguments in favour of continuing the occupation of Afghanistan to measure up to logical scrutiny so I invited you to that debate. The starting point was what your position was so I could understand what it was we would be debating. At no point in this exchange did I intend to personally attack or offend you and certainly wasn't looking to pick a fight with you.

          How be we start again?

I'm curious to know why you (apparently) support the continued mission in Afghanistan? I'm not referring to the initial invasion (which I supported) but the ongoing open-ended mission as it is currently set out. Your thoughts on the "surge" would be appreciated as well.

I don't imagine we will ever come to agreement on this issue Dan but that doesn't mean we can't have a reasonable discussion.

No, let's not. How about you address the list.

            • This list? The ones you only support some of?

Some want a punitive expedition. Some want flypaper in the area. Some want to keep Pakistan and its intelligence service in line. Some want to keep Iran encircled. Some want to keep Kabul (Afghanistan's center of gravity) in our hands. Some want to capture/kill OBL and his cronies. Some want to suppress Al Qaeda. Some want to make Afghanistan a better place. Some want to create a government that can rule the entirety of the country. Some want to outspend the Saudis. Some want to stanch the flow of drugs into their countries. And so on.

Why not deal with the ones you support? I'm not into answering every insane motive that might exist. I have found you to be reasonable in the past (before this thread) so I will ask again - What do you consider the reasonable arguments?

              • Just address the list. You challenged me. I responded with a good list. Now it's your turn to address it.

                  • No, you didn't. You put in zero effort here.

TCO's post was good, however. He addressed the list.

                    • I'm sitting here at my keyboard ready to go Dan. All I ask is what is it that I am to be arguing. I'm not prepared to type out that entire list must less address each and every point on it (it's a shopping list) unless you are telling me you support all the arguments as "reasonable". If this is your position say so I will start typing.

                      • No, I changed my mind. Don't address the list. There is nothing new to this discussion, if you are trying to simplify all the possibilities away.

When I think of Afghanistan, I don't think in a linear fashion. It's a tremendously complex place. There are reasons to be there, and reasons not to be there. Some reasons are more convincing to me than others on both sides, but lots of reasons have something to offer, even if the reasons themselves are not ultimately compelling.
