Indeed. I liked it, but felt 10 episodes was a bit short. After spending 3 on Peleliu, they breezed through Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

I think reading the books helped. I didn't feel quite the same connection as with Band of Brothers, which was more narrowly focused (a group of characters from one company).

                      • Well, this is a seldom-bumped thread, it seems. I just finished Mary Renault's "The Nature of Alexander." After reading it, I tried watching the Oliver Stone version again and found I couldn't. It's too painful to see how he took a fascinating, emotionally commanding historical figure and turned him into a whinging, PC-advocating little emo *****.

Anyway, I've moved on to "The Thirty Years War: Europe's Tragedy" by Peter H. Wilson. Tough going, not because the author is bad but because it's SO. FREAKING. COMPLICATED. I probably shouldn't have made this the first serious history book I ever tackled, but it was unintentional. I got it for my Dad for Father's Day, started reading it on the way home. He said, "Thanks, but I've got three books ahead of it on my reading list, so go ahead and finish it."
