      • In an attempt to quickly add to my percieved intelligence, I have been reading a lot of the "Introducing" series. It's not really reading, but it's a lot better than other options for the bathroom. The 90 Minute Philosopher series is more rigorous than these, but they lay decent groundwork for future reading. The book on Derrida finally helped me understand just what the hell he was talking about.

I'm currently working on: Introducing Rosseau, Picasso, Trotsky, Foucault, and Heidegger. Along with Woody Allen's Without Feathers.
Lysistrata: It comes down to this: Only we women can save Greece.

          • I just finished A Short History of Russia's First Civil War by Chester Dunning, and have now switched to lighter fare with a Terry Pratchett book, Interesting Times. I'm trying to do the Pratchett books in more or less the order written.

                • I finished Francis Wheen's biography of Karl Marx last night and am moving onto a re-reading of 'The Mayor of Casterbridge'. I read the entire works of Hardy when I was a lot younger and feel the time is right to repeat this (well, probably except 'Under the Greenwood Tree' which is his worst by a long chalk).

                  • I've been rereading Joseph Ratzinger's book about Jesus this summer btw, a good read. And he's humble. I like that.

Also did a little rereading of Richard Wurmbrand's Tortured for Christ, a book about how it was to be a Christian in the communistic Eastern Bloc when not bowing down to the commies' demands.

                    • Quite a comeback to my admission of reading a Marx biography.

Before that, I read a Groucho Marx bio. What do you have to say to that?

"Rogue Warrior" (the 1st book) was autobiographical, interestingly enough, but the rest are fiction, so as not to get in trouble for some things he might reveal, I suppose.

I like the earlier ones better than the recent ones. John Weisman was the other author of those. At some point in the middle of the series, they weren't quite as good, though I kept going, hoping they'd get better.

I suppose a lot depends on how you like Marcinko's bombastic Rogue Warrior schtick. It might get old. But it can be fun when he goes and kicks ass despite the obstacles bureaucrats and diplomats put in his way. Early on, when he was still in the Navy, one of his favorite things was the UNODIR (unless otherwise directed) memo, which outlined his plans, which his CO wouldn't like, and which would hit his CO's desk after he left the office.
