"One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Just started 'Treasures Of Islam' by Philip Bamborough and 'Sydney' by Geoffrey Moorhouse.

Just finished an edition of 'Horizon' with a funny essay on the Sukhomlinov Effect:

In the current issue of Horizon, Scholars Roger Beaumont and Bernard J. James review the dress of military leaders from bedraggled American colonists to pajamaed Viet Cong. With the exception of the drably turned-out forces on both sides of the Korean War, the gaudier the officers, the surer the defeat. Jump-suited Churchill was ordained by the Sukhomlinov rule to prevail over the strutting dandy Adolf Hitler. Japan's high command surrendered in aiguillettes and swords; General Douglas MacArthur accepted in tieless khaki. The authors point out that shortly before the 1968 Tet offensive. American fashion experts had designated fastidiously uniformed General William Westmoreland as one of the best-dressed American men. But the Sukhomlinovian verdict on Viet Nam is a curt "data incomplete."'

Stalin's Ghost by Martin Cruz Smith -- a good mystery set in Moscow.

I like GRR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire.. so I like epic rough fantasy. But this seems a lot more like The Black Company then SoIaF. One of the things is that it seems to be basically all action and little otherwise...

While I read The Black Company, I regret owning it and will probably get rid of it soon (it isn't worth rereading).

Just finished Stephenson's Anathem -- I enjoyed it, but he clearly is in love with how smart he is. I didn't mind the pedantic tone, but some may be annoyed.

Before that, Blood Meridian by McCarthy. Quite excellent like all his other stuff.

I'm in the mood for some epic fantasy -- anyone know anything about Winterbirth by Ruckley?

                          HERETIC!

Try his later (recent) works. Or the series they're republishing in trade paperback, forget it's name off the top of my head, TPs look similar to the republished black company ... something about forgotten empire or somewhat. Both are more 'epic fantasy' than the black company.

Or, try "Elantris" by Brian Sanderson and/or his trilogy (which is somewhat more epic than Elantris, though Elantris is amazing and better writing than the trilogy). He's the chap who will be writing the last Robert Jordan book (or has written, I suppose?).

Or, Russel Kirkpatrick. Sort of Tolkienesque, but a bit harsher (to his characters), and pretty decent writing.

For me, I'm reading Drood by Dan Simmons... if you didn't like The Terror you won't like this (similarly slow and winding, and actually sort of refers to that story in parts). But if you like Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens... you may like or hate this, depending on how much you like them as human beings (They're the main characters, and not necessarily nice people.)

No idea, haven't actually read that. Kirkpatrick or Sanderson are recommends (as above) for epic fantasy, or maybe Gail Martin's Necromancer series, or Karen Miller's first duo (much better than her second).
