I don't want to indulge in schadenfreude, and I certainly feel bad for the guy, but coming after his glee in demanding the firings of UAW members, there's a certain irony.

So I got the official word this morning. Myself and 25% of the Toronto office (12 other consultants) got laid off. Essentially all people with no project right now or projects ending soon.

The good news is: the package they gave me is very good and well above what they legally have to give. The letter I got also states I had exceptional performance and this decision was in no way performance-based, but 100% financial -- this will be handy for future job applications. They also mentioned they will be more than happy to provide written and phone references.

I'm going through my recurring bills and figuring out how much notice I need to give to cancel everything.

It's kind of stressful because I'm normally a very plan-oriented person, and right now there is no plan for absolutely anything, really. Chaos.

I've no glee in the firing of UAW workers. I never did. Kindly **** you.

I am of the opinion that people who cannot be financially supported by their company need to be let go. Myself included. It's a hazard of the job market. The fact that people in unions think they should be immune to this kind of **** pisses me off.

I'm just asking for genuine fairness. Union workers get far too much special treatment -- that they do not deserve. Welcome to the real world.

UAW need to take massive pay/benefit cuts and many need to be laid off for the companies to survive. That's not glee, it's realism and fairness.

I rent an apartment. I need to give 2 months notice to vacate, but I've already paid last month's rent -- so only 1 more payment.

I did get a good package that'll definitely help me survive the next 2 months -- and after that I'll be moving in with the folks until I or my SO gets a good job.

The very first thing you should is file for unemployment. It won't be much compared to what you got, but a little bit coming in will slow the rate at which you go through your savings. Next, go party. Enjoy your freedom for a bit. Go do things you want to do but don't have the time to do. Then, sit down, and make a plan.

Bunch of guys from work (mix of laid off + still employed) are going out to a bar this weekend. We'll have fun.
