      Unresponsive.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Could the Obama administration be seeing the light? Seems dubious, what with the Democratic Party rife with labor special interests, but I guess you never know.

Bankruptcy Funding Solicited for Car Makers

By JEFFREY MCCRACKEN and JOHN D. STOLL

Outside advisers to the U.S. Treasury have started lining up the largest bankruptcy loan ever, talking with banks and other lenders about at least $40 billion in financing for General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, in case the two auto makers need it, said several people familiar with the matter.

While acknowledging the grimness of the task, administration officials involved in the auto talks said they are trying to find a way to restructure the two companies without resorting to bankruptcy proceedings. They stressed the latest efforts were "due diligence" on the part of the government advisers, and that bankruptcy financing may not be necessary.

Still, people involved in talks with senior Obama administration officials said that the administration believes that the option of Chapter 11 filings by the two auto makers needs to be seriously considered.

"Everything is on the table right now," one person involved in the matter said, adding that President Barack Obama doesn't want to see more massive job losses in the auto industry. His administration also doesn't want to anger the United Auto Workers by appearing to push for bankruptcy, this person added.

Dan seems to think that US government officials should be obligated in their personal lives to buy sub-standard vehicles because it's patriotic.

Nevermind that the Acura TSX, IIRC, is made in Ohio.

And, of the three cars mentioned, that's the purchase I might quibble with

I know what... we should stuff the "task force" with people who thought buying a shiny new [insert POS GM/Ford/Chrysler car here] was a GREAT idea.

The irony of a UAW hand-picked jury that isn't quite what they expected is funny to me.

Workers in Germany and Japan get paid more and have better benefits than American autoworkers. When companies come to the U.S., they prefer not to have unions because they can get away with it. If they could bust their unions in their home countries, they would. It's the same reason why American automakers, and in fact, everyone, tries to move production to non-union places. They don't want the workers to have any rights, because if the workers have rights, it interferes with the bosses' ability to do whatever the **** they want.

There are two problems with Detroit. One, they have to carry a heavy insurance load, while foreign automakers don't, since civilized countries have universal health care. In addition, Detroit did the same thing that killed them in the 70s, made gas guzzlers and ignored the trend towards making fuel efficient cars, so when the price of gas doubled, they were left without a product to sell.

But, go ahead, keep trying to destroy the basis for the "middle class." Let's all have 3rd world wages and livings.

                            Source?

Last I saw, the manufacturing costs at VW are a tiny fraction of what they are at the Big Three.

Canada has universal health care and that doesn't make their Canadian divisions (or the CAW) any difference.

You're not telling me Toyota pays 3rd world wages, do you? They pay very, very well sans a union.

What's better is that Che both states that Japanese auto workers are BETTER compensated than Americans, AND that busting the union will lead to lower wages here.
