Banks need capital other than from bailouts.

SAAB is going down, and rightly so. They have been a company on life support since GM took over, I'm flabbergasted that both they and SAAB let it go this far. You can't rely on two models ffs! Not for a consumer car (SAAB is not Koenigsegg... ) And noone has questioned this, not the management or the union. Now it' too late to do something about it. SAAB has failed as a company by not evolving and now they are paying the price, why should the tax payers have to pay for a company that's obviously not able to take care of itself? I support the goverments decision to let SAAB fend for itself. I feel sorry for the workers, but you can't go on producing stuff that people won't buy. That's simple economics...

Most unions are probably fine, but there are some unions like the autoworkers union that are grossly overpowered and are major reasons for the difficulties their companies have.

The cost of the top brass don't come close to comparing to the money the unions suck through unreasonable wages and benefits?

Not only the top brass, but the entire management tree has been a problem at GM. There are too many country club memberships and not enough folks who are fanatical about cars.

The UAW in the Detroit 3 plants have caused a lot of big problems because they became too greedy. Without getting into specifics, GM has been exporting jobs to non-unionized overseas plants for forever to get away from the UAW. Most Japanese and European car companies building plants in the US will not stand for UAW representation. This is an indication of how bad the UAW is. It's not as if the likes of Daimler-Benz are unfamiliar with union representation in Germany, after all.

True that the UAW has managed to get impressive wages and benefits for their members, but that's what it's there for. To get the best possible deal for their members. GM's CEO Rick Wagoner earned $2.2 million in 2008 plus 75,000 restricted stock units valued at $1.68 million, based on GM's closing stock price in March 2008. He was also given stock options representing 500,000 shares according to the Wall Street Journal The fact that he's had a massive paycut since 2003 doesn't really matter. It's still an obscene amount of money and the equivalent of 66 workers. Now I wouldn't have a problem with this if Rick Wagoner would bring in 66 times the profit of each auto worker, but somehow I doubt he does that...

Nobody brings in any profit at GM. Not the workers. Not the management. They haven't for over a half decade.

Why the **** do you think people are complaining about the unions? Cutting the executives' salaries to $0 wouldn't make the company profitable. The only way to do it is throw out the ridiculous union contracts.

No, the only way to do that is to make cars that people want to buy!

How the hell can it be the law of the market jungle with the union is preventing market forces from acting?

There should be NO government intervention here (GM's management is inept, their engineers are incompetent, the UAW is insanely greedy).

One way to rectify the situation is to bust the UAW in addition to shaking up the management.
