The second indicates some kind of hardware (not software) fault. Obviously, if the hardware fails the software can't do its job. While the accident is still in the early stages of investigation, it is quite clear the reason for the crash was not the anti-stall mechanism, but the fact that the plane's purported power surge disrupted its flight.

This is not too surprising, given what we know about European reliability.

Pilot error may have downed Buffalo flight: report

NEW YORK -- Investigators of last week's plane crash near Buffalo found evidence that pilot error -- and not ice build-up -- may have led to the accident that killed 50 people, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Citing people familiar with the situation, the daily said the commuter plane slowed to an unsafe speed as it neared the airport, which prompted an automatic stall warning, and that the pilot pulled back on the Bombardier plane's controls and added power instead of pushing the plane's nose down and forward to regain speed.

The pilot's actions, they said, locked the plane in a stall which caused it to plunge to earth, killing all 49 people aboard and one person on the ground.

Investigators were wrapping up their work at the charred site of impact but said Tuesday they still had no breakthrough on what caused the crash in a snow storm near Buffalo, New York.

In a harrowing plunge, Continental Airlines Flight 3407 dropped 800 feet in five seconds shortly before it crashed Thursday into a house in Clarence Center, N.Y., killing all on board and one person in the house.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said much of its team sent in to investigate would return to Washington Tuesday with material collected at the crash site.

A preliminary review of flight data and cockpit voice recorders revealed that the plane was on autopilot for part of its approach to the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport, in western New York state on the Canadian border, NTSB investigator Steven Chealander has said.

Mr. Chealander said the plane's deicing system was activated 11 minutes after departure from Newark, N.J., and remained on for the duration of the flight. The aircraft's stall-protection equipment was also activated.

With black box flight recorders being studied for clues as to what sent the plane plummeting to the ground, it still could be months before the mystery is completely solved.

Though many signs seemed to suggest ice accumulation on the wings might have changed the plane's airworthiness, authorities warned against drawing conclusions.

"In icy conditions, it might be best to disengage the auto pilot and fly the airplane manually so that you have the manual feel for what might be changing in your flight regime because of the ice," Mr. Chealander said Monday.

But he said he would "caution about jumping to conclusions that it might be an icing incident."

A twin-engine turboprop identical to the one that crashed made the same flight on the same route 27 minutes later and landed without incident, Mr. Chealander said.

The alert, reissued Wednesday by the airline's pilot association, warned Southwest pilots there was a "potentially significant hazard" concerning the instrument landing system's glide slope guidance signal for runway 23.

The airline advised, "Pilots who are preparing to configure and land have the potential to experience abrupt pitch up, slow airspeed, and approach to stall if conditions present themselves in a certain manner."

Southwest Airlines spokesperson Linda Rutherford said an earthen dam at the end of the runway was interfering with the signal being sent to inbound flights. Rutherford would not confirm if any of Southwest's recent flights into Buffalo experienced problems on approach.
