Krill attacks the forum I am in almost every day. Oh the blasphemy. Way more flame wars and childish excursions on CFC. Not worth the hassle most of the time.

You're either deluded or trolling me, and I'd reckon the latter.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.
I never could get used to the cartoony piggish 3D graphics of the game, but the gameplay was okay.
"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.
Otherwise, just come to the general forum and ask directly. A few modders hang about there for sure.
Very few: the civ forums on this site died a long time ago, now CFC is freaking massive compared to us.
I am not trolling you, the above is a direct quote about the very much alive civ forums on this site.

CIV IV is the best for MP so far. SIMUL play is now viable. Simul moves in civ II didn't quite work because of the combat model. When one unit can eliminate an entire stack, the first player to get their command in had way too much of an advantage. Now while it's still important to move quickly, it's not the end all. And most of the cheating methods have been removed. And since MP was intented to be part of the game more so in IV than II the interface gives you some nice features. (like easily showing the ping rate for all those in the game or showing who's completed their turn and who hasn't so you know who the slow pokes are so you can abuse them.

Abuse the slowpokes (who, of course, move faster than light as compared to the SP players)!

IN SP it doesn't matter how fast you move.
But all my mp experience probably makes me play SP considerably faster only because I keep thinking I'm playin MP so I don't micro-manage THAT much. Yeah, every now an then I'll do a more thorough review of my civ but in general, check the city only when something is produced. Actually automate a few workers (for connecting resources option) in the midgame so I don't have to order them. I'll alwasy keep a few under control to take care of obvious pet projects or to as groupies to my SODs repair damage in conquered areas. (but since I'm assuming I'll be keeping cities I dont' want to pillage much so sometimes there's now a whole lot to do in the midgame.
The timer in MP is a good reminder but for a few exceptions it's just a nice reminder.
In the early game it's 30 seconds. If you can't move the 1 or 2 units you have in 30 seconds, yes you're playing way to slow. You've got one city that's taking the next 12 turns to create a worker, it's not like you have to check in on it every 2 turns.

I've never played MP, but I know exactly which side of the boundary I'd be on, especially if I survived to the later turns when managing all the cities takes forever.

In most cases, I move my units, end my turn, and then do whatever city maint I can while waiting for the other players to finish their turn. Sometime I run out of time but how critical is it really if you missed maximizing a city for a turn or two. The only time that time is really critical for me is when I'm at war. I'd rather allocate my precious seconds to managing my army then my cities and workers. So sometimes during heavy wars my cities suffer a touch. No biggie. And if you use the key shortcuts and are experienced with stack and partial stack attacks, the combat can be done quickly. (and the quicker you are is usually to your advantage)
It's actually not as bad as a lot of SP players think. It's just a slightly different mindset that you can adapt to in just a few games.

I've just bought this for under £12 (including postage), and am looking forward to wasting what remains of my life conquering the world/reaching AC. I stopped playing Civ III because the resource requirements drove to madness - a large world with only 1 oil square FFS, but this should be excellent. Give me 12 years, and I'll be ready for MP. Or married with children who will be ready for MP instead. But I forgot to use the 'poly link to Amazon. Does it even exist any more?
