He still would've been confirmed, but he'd make a far worse salesman for healthcare reform than otherwise. It really is a shame that he had to go since he's almost uniquely suited for the job in terms of having policy familiarity, legislative experience, and relationships with Congressional powerbrokers (maybe John Podesta could be a substitute). It was the NYT editorial that decided it. You can't be effective when your own base has turned against you.
Tom Daschle told NBC News that he called President Obama this morning after reading the New York Times editorial calling for the withdrawal of Daschle's nomination.
Clearly emotional in a brief telephone conversation, Daschle said: "I read the New York Times. I can't pass health care if it's too much of a distraction ... so I called the president this morning."

There is some conflict in that Geithner did sign a document, among dozens, when he first started his employment with the World Bank which told him he had to pay this tax but then his CPA gave him written advise to the contrary so he went with the CPA. Either way it is pretty minor and has been fixed.
The tax code is very complex, with different ways to interpret this, so every competent CPA and tax preparer will start by asking how safe the client wants to go. Minimize taxes? Minimize risk of an audit? You would think people who work in the public eye would always choose the latter, because of the risk of embarrassment or worse.No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.Comment

We ditched one tax guy (the father of a good friend, which was a bit awkward) because he sent us a return with a bunch of charitable contributions he simply made up. I don't recall him being even the slightest bit embarrassed when that went down.
Hell, I made a thread about that here at 'poly, IIRC. It seems like ancient history now.

Yeah charitable contributions is always that fuzzy area.
We take some deductions for contributions that were made but not properly documented. Like Clothing donations to veteran groups. Where if closely documented it would be thousands of dollars but we only claim 100s of dollars. If audited there might be an issue. But we always discuss that with our CPA every year.
