yes, given the nature of the process (in the sense that at least two people are required), a large portion of young people find it difficult to participate in such activities

Ben didn't. He states that, based upon his observation, those people having premartial sex appeared to be unhappy.

Note: While I doubt that pre-maritial sex would cause unhappiness, I can unstand why unhappy people might foolishly seek out pre-maritial sex as a possible remedy for their unhappiness.

This is true. I am a virgin, but I likely wouldn't be if I had had a number of serious relationships.

Most people who are my age have had a couple of serious relationships at least. So even those who look for sex as only part of serious relationships, are going to have premarital sex, when people get married so often in their 30s.

And I think it would be great if people only had sex with the person that they marry. It is just very difficult/etc to have occur when people marry in their 30s.

Exactly Barnabas's point and I think true. People in the early years of all the world's major religions were getting married at 15 through 18 years of age, so avoiding premartial sex was no biggie. As people wait until 30s or after to get married, its quite a bit different.

Today’s study included 289 middle-school and high-school students who said, in a 1996 U.S. survey of adolescent behavior, that they had taken a virginity pledge. They were matched with 645 other teens with similar attitudes toward 100 items, including religion and sex. After five years, the groups were compared on self-reported sexual behavior, test results for sexually transmitted diseases and the use of birth control.

If they were matched according to similar attitudes toward sex and religion then it's probably reasonable that the pledge didn't really make a difference. Presumably the ones who took the pledge were rather conservative regarding sex and religion. If the non-pledge taking control group had similar beliefs and attitudes then likely they were favorable to abstinence also.
