  • OK back on subject.

I'm not happy about the Warren pick, but I understand it and don't think it's something to get too upset over. Obama said he was going to reach out to those who did not support him, and this fits with that. If the anti-Prop 8 campaigns tried to reach out to evangelical voters a bit more rather than sitting on their asses, it might not have passed at all.

The way I see it, an evangelical conservative gets a purely ceremonial 5 minutes at the inaugeration. In the meantime, Obama has actually appointed gays to his administration and they'll be helping formulate policy. We also have Obama's commitment to ending DADT and repealing DOMA. So far, I'd say the win still goes to teh gays.

Hell, even Melissa "I won't pay my CA taxes" Etheridge said she has spoken with Warren and believe outreach to Evangelicals is the way to go.

    • I'm wondering if Warren will use the time and attention afforded him between now and the inauguration day to hector the administration on the issue of abortion.

      • Obama is on record as wanting to work with Pro-Lifers to reduce the number of unwanted pregancies.

        • That's pretty much irrelevant.

            • Wonderful! The good reverand can keep beating his head against a concrete wall, get absolutely nowhere, and meanwhile, abortions will go on as they are currently. At least Obama's plan will reduce the number of abortions.

              • Actually, there was an article in the WaPo magazine a few weeks back that said doctors are choosing to work in abortion at far too low of a rate. There's something about the fear of assassination combined with the constant picketing that turns them off (plus it isn't fun to begin with). Give us another generation with Roe v. Wade to galvanize us and we'll win no matter what laws you put on the books. You won't have anyone to perform abortions. Let's make abortions technically legal, theoretically safe and absurdly rare

Then he has not read my past posts about my thoughts on Obama and equal marriage rights.

Since Obama has spoken out against Proposition 8 and he publicly favors at least civil unions, I believe that Obama may personally believe in equal marriage rights but for pragmatic, political reasons, he is not ready yet to publicly take this position.

                  • So you're willing to re-imagine the positions of politicians you like in order to avoid coming to grips with the fact that they're bigoted by your standard. Amazing.

                    • Anyway, given that I've voted against a Prop-8 like measure in the past and support civil unions, I expect a full apology for the times in the past where you've insinuated that I'm bigoted towards homosexuals.

And this is why people get so disappointed by the political process. They keep thinking that deep down inside "their guy" really believes something different than what he's saying. Then they feel let down when either a) he actually does, but because he's shown to compromise on it and it's helped him, he continues to do it [that's the better option, mind], or b) [more likely] he actually doesn't share these beliefs and what he says is really what he believes.

President-elect Obama has always been against gay marriage and wasn't all that vocal against Prop 8 (and he was criticized for that) even though he was against it.

                          • So why does Obama advocate repealing DOMA?

What practical effect do you think repealing DOMA will do? Massachusetts marriages still won't have to be accepted in other states under Full Faith and Credit jurisprudence.
