He hadn't done much at that time, mainly because so many of the cases that he's completed since spring of '05 were in the investigation and Grand Jury phase back then. Since, he has come through with a number of high profile convictions and indictments in public corruption cases.

      Special election, I believe.

Apparently, the U.S. Senate may not have the ability to refuse to seat Blago should he appoint himself, either. A prior SCOTUS case set a precedent (in the U.S. House, at least) that that body couldn't refuse to seat a congressman who had been re-elected despite indictment.

Of course, since this wouldn't be an election but rather self-selection, the precedent may not hold.

If it does, the Senate would have to swear him in, but could promptly remove him with a 2/3 vote.

I'm fairly sure there is a difference between how the House and the Senate work in this manner, but I'm too busy to look it up.

Nah. Fitz would have been replaced by a Bushie, who would have been all too eager to take down a Dem governator.

Good idea. EVERYONE who possibly could have been appointed by Blago is somewhat tainted. A special election is the only thing that'll help remove the taint.

                    • Let the Illinois congress vote the replacement.
With all the deals that would be flying on that one, maybe we could jail the lot of them.

To be fair, there's no evidence #5 actually did anything wrong. The recordings are of Blago stating he talked with an "emissary" of #5s, not recordings of any such actual conversation. It's also possible that the conversation occured without Jackson's knowledge, or that Blago is once again deluding himself as to reality, maybe having convinced himself a promise was made when it actually wasn't.

This certainly prevents Jackson from becoming Senator, though.

By whom?? There's lots of speculation of who the various "numbers" refer to, but last I heard, there's no evidence linking any specific persons to those numbers.

You think JJJ might not be corrupt.

                                1. He's an Illinois politician
                                2. He's JESSE JACKSON JUNIOR

Admittedly, he presumably is smart enough not to be caught TALKING ON THE PHONE about illegal stuff. But I don't doubt that he happily would have done what was needed to become congressman, either. I also don't think this prevents him from still getting it - his dad is still pretty darn powerful, and he actually was a reasonable candidate before all of this came up.
