You'd have to have the legislature change the law... and not sure if it can go ex post facto if Blago manages to appoint someone before the law goes into effect (though that person may be rejected by the Senate)

It has to do with the historic responsibility of the Senate. The Senate represented the states, while the House represented the people. It wasn't until early in the 20th century that Senators were actually elected by the people. Until then, they were elected by state legislatures.John Brown did nothing wrong.

Everybody had to know this was coming
But it is nice to see an Illinois governor be arrested while still in office, instead of waiting until they are out of office, like the previous governor.
It is ironic considering he ran on the themes of "honest politics" and "get the crook out of office".Keep on Civin'

Just because the guy is decent doesn't mean that he should get to unilaterally pick my representative at all levels of government.
The US is already (in?)famous for electing EVERYBODY . But most of you let your Governors choose your Senator in what is a fairly unremarkable circumstance?
Do you really think it's more important to elect the local sheriff than it is to elect half of your Senatorial representation for the next 2 years?12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

In the earliest intercepted conversation about the Senate seat described in the affidavit, Blagojevich told Deputy Governor A on November 3 that if he is not going to get anything of value for the open seat, then he will take it for himself: "if . . . they're not going to offer anything of any value, then I might just take it." Later that day, speaking to Advisor A, Blagojevich said: "I'm going to keep this Senate option for me a real possibility, you know, and therefore I can drive a hard bargain." He added later that the seat "is a [expletive] valuable thing, you just don't give it away for nothing."

According to a federal criminal complaint, Blagojevich also was charged with illegally threatening to withhold state assistance to Tribune Co., the owner of the Chicago Tribune, in the sale of Wrigley Field. In return for state assistance, Blagojevich allegedly wanted members of the paper's editorial board who had been critical of him fired."Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. Yeah, and now they're elected by the people.
