Actually, it's made clear somewhere in Tolkien's writings (not sure where) that mortals in Valinor die VERY quickly. Mortal bodies can't endure the divine energy or something. They just get to see the earthly paradise before they croak. The ending to LOTR is quite sad; Frodo has saved Middle-Earth, but in the process been wounded so deeply that he cannot bear to live in it any longer.

I think you are refering to the men Numenor (sp) who tried to sail to Valinor despite being forbidden to do so. The Valar put the contingent "to sleep" once they reached the shores of Valinor.
I am pretty sure the Valar can extend the life of a mortal to whatever they like. They must have some influence, as we have seen with Aragorn.

No, he's referring to another bit mentioned in the Akallabeth, which specifically says that morals cannot gain immortality simply by going to the immortals' lands. They burn out. I think it's the part where the elves or the Valar are trying to talk the Numenoreans out of their treason (long before the invasion).
Hey, you are just as involved in this discussion as we are and you haven't even read the books!

I'm in the middle of reading two books right now - a non-fiction book on the history of Romans and the historical-fiction novel by Steven Saylor, Roma.
