Actually, it's made clear somewhere in Tolkien's writings (not sure where) that mortals in Valinor die VERY quickly. Mortal bodies can't endure the divine energy or something. They just get to see the earthly paradise before they croak. I think you are refering to the men Numenor (sp) who tried to sail to Valinor despite being forbidden to do so. No, he's referring to another bit mentioned in the Akallabeth, which specifically says that morals cannot gain immortality simply by going to the immortals' lands. They burn out. I think it's the part where the elves or the Valar are trying to talk the Numenoreans out of their treason (long before the invasion).
