The books don't end at Mordor. The shire has to be rescued too from Sauron's henchmen that had enthralled the King of the Rohan for so long. The four halflings get involved in a little direct combat.

The sailing away part for Gandalf and Frodo stretches the story a bit too. Some may recall that the father warned the daughter early in the Two Towers film that she would outlive Aragorn greatly and would wither among the humans. Therefore, she should leave with the others on the LAST boats to the west. This all takes place before Rohan's last stand and the whole plot of Return of the King. So what boat is this that takes our heroes to the new land of the elves?

They made a special exception for particularly great heroes in allowing yet one more boat to sail off. Changing from their original plans.

Why couldn't they then of come back for the daughter of the King of the elves, instead of forcing her to renounce her immortality. Tolkien must have felt his readers would object to her having her cake and eating it too. Where's the dramatic tension in that?

I try not to over analyze stories for minor gaps or loopholes. Sometimes it can be fun to come across them, but they usually do not ruin the whole thing for me. It just depends.

Logic gaps in a trilogy that took ten years to write and develop are interesting to consider. The man made up complete languages for the elves, the dwarves, and the so-called Southern peoples. He developed an entire history of how Middle-Earth evolved from cooling fireball to the first battle of Mordor and never bothered to record it coherently. He developed the history of the different branches of humans, hobbits, dwarves, and the twistings of the elves that led to the creation of different Orc types. (Only Sarumon developed human-like creatures from the earth. All of the Orcs were once elves.)

This is one of the finest fantasy works ever written; the finest I have ever read. I like to note the literary devices Tolkien used to create tension, where the work itself seems to offer an alternative.

Needless to say, I have read this one (plus The Hobbit) mor than a few times. Have also read some of the accompanying material more than once. I didn't mean to sound too nitpicky. I genuinely love this stuff.

Yes, I thought the actually happy happy ending part was a touch too much, but considering it was the end of a LONG trilogy, I was able to overlook it.

I haven't read any of the LOTR books; just saw the films.
I own the triology's DVD set.

It was not all happiness. Bilbo, Gandorf, and Frodo had to bid their farewell to the people whom they love.

And I didn't have a problem with the extent of the happiness and celebration - hello, they had survived in saving their world and their very existence.

Then you should shut your mouth and the subject

The arguments presented in the OP are valid, but the author doesn't give enough credence to certain counterpoints. For instance, the distractions Sauron faced in the books would not have occurred necessarily in this alternate storyline.

That, and the books would have SUCKED.

In the books, there is a lot more to the fight at the gate, including what threat the approach of men really meant. Also, the rescue is more from Mordor and less from the lava as it rose.

As to the eagles, the fact is the author was reluctant to overuse that deus ex machina to solve every problem. Might as well call the series: Eagles Over Middle Earth.
