  • Seattle/Redmond or the Bay Area

In all likelihood my SO and I will be moving in May (or shortly after), since he graduates from school in this God-forsaken province of Ontario.

I'm a dual US/Canadian citizen, the original plan was to move to Calgary but given the current oil prices and given that the probable new Federal leaders who are seizing power want to:
    - Screw Alberta because it's Not Quebec (Duceppe)
    - Screw Alberta by closing the oil sands (Layton)
    - Screw Alberta by hamstringing already halting growth in the energy sector (Dion)
    I am re-evaluating.

Which area is best to live in? Vote early, vote often, vote with confidence.

Isn't a move to the Bay area just a bit cliche for a gay couple?

And, more importantly, why don't you substitute a Santa hat for the turban on your avatar?

I'm sure Seattle/Redmond would be cheaper living. But if you're willing to deal with housing, then personally I would go with the Bay Area.

Make sure you check unemployment in the Bay Area. By next year, it might be high.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Agreed with Dan. Bay Area is nicer, but you pay for that.

San Francisco is one of the world's best cities, but it is a wee bit pricey. Other Bay Area locations are a mixed lot based on what you and the SO do to earn money. San Jose is more sunny and warm to hot but has also beome pricey. Oakland/Richmond is a rough area generally, especially if you actually have money. You have to get pretty far south or north to find reasonably-priced, relatively-safe housing.

Age matters. If you are under 50, Seattle may have more appeal. Both cities are reputed to be very multi-culti, but San Francisco looks the part a bit more, if that matters.

              I also agree with DanS.

I've lived in the Bay Area for four years (San Ramon) and liked the climate. Some cities are, obviously, better than others.

The SO is a chemical engineer and I'm a software engineer.

                  I don't do graphics.

And I'm not concerned with being cliche...

There are several big petrochemical plants in the east bay area if that's what your SO is interested in doing.

Thank you, Oerdin -- I have lived there and probably know more about it than you do.

Maybe. I do go there for work a lot and used to live in NorCal. Sactown but the main entertainment in Sactown is spending weekends in the bay area.

Why do Californians call Northern California "NorCal" when the proper abbreviation is obviously "NoCal"? They got SoCal right, so I guess they're not completely retarded...

I had mentioned location in the last post because I thought you had mentioned chemicals before. The Richmond area, away from the down town, has some nice suburban-feeling tracts, if you are into that. Would put SO close to work most likely. We software types can work from home for most purposes anymore, unless security issues arise.

Silicon Valley is close enough. Maybe I'd apply to work for Apple just to piss Agathon off. Good friend of mine and former colleague of mine now works at the Googleplex in Mountain View and could put in a good word for me, too...

Bay Area seems to be most ideal because it's a good place for both mine and the SO's work...
