I'm thinking of a cheesy 80's sci-fi kids movie I watched over and over again when I was 6 or 7, but now the only vague details I remember were that the protagonist was a boy in his pre-to-late teens who was held under some kind of house arrest on a top-secret-ish military base and is tended to by a short robot that rolled around kinda like R2D2. I think his eventual escape was inside the hollow casing of that robot, but I can't be 100% sure. All I remember about the overall plot theme was that there was something unusual about that kid that the government dudes at the base were interested in, which kinda reminds me of the kid in Wargames except I think it was something in his nature rather than - like the Wargames hacker kid - something he did. As is typical in movies like this, one or more of the scientists really sympathized with the kid but their bosses had shady motives, or something like that. I vaguely remember him piloting a really weird sharp-shaped craft somewhere near the end too, through a surrealistic-looking space, possibly a wormhole or space-time rift or something. And there was one scene where the craft landed at a crappy old gas station IIRC, confusing the hell out of people. And there was some adult guy, possibly alien, who was helping him out; all I remember about what he looked like is that his attire reminds me of George Carlin's character in the first Bill & Ted.

Anyone that was older back then know what I'm talking about? The images from childhood are itching at my brain but I can't freaking remember the title or what it was all about. Whatever it was it'd probably be a guilty pleasure if I ran into it on cable now and watched for nostalgia's sake.

Or maybe I'm just dredging up a hella-weird dream that wasn't a movie at all...

You don't think women's groups would be up-in-arms over a movie title like that? There are people who don't understand tongue-in-cheek humour. Or even if they claim to understand the "joke", they think that there are men out there who would take the title seriously. (Not that I agree with that point of view. I just think political correctness would win in a case like this.)

If there was a remake of the movie, my guess is they would give it a different title to avoid bad publicity. (...or maybe...they would keep the title in order to get publicity. "There's no such thing as bad publicity.")

By the way, I thought the publication of O.J.'s book ("If I Did It") was blocked.

These are made-for-TV movies (TNT), but my wife now has me hooked on a series of movies called The Librarian -- mostly notable for the casting of Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin. Noah Wyle is the title character.

Very cheesy but totally self-aware. Sort of a Indiana Jones-meets-National Treasure, complete with magic-and-stuff, heroic soundtrack, etc. Gotta admit, I loved it for its badness.

I love it in the first movie where the "good girl" decks bad girl Kelly Hu, snarling, "Get your own nerd!"
