Well, it's not quite that simple. It only applies if the product was faulty from purchase. Within the first six months after purchase it's the seller that has the problem proving it was ok at the sales time - after that, it's the customer that has to prove it was faulty from start - not often that easy .

Still quite the difference to the situation described in the OP, i´d say... If, in europe, the boy would have come to the desk, with the game and the receit, the whole process of replacement would have probably taken less than 2 minutes and would have gone without a problem. It just goes without saying, that you get a working product for your money and anything else is an enbarresment for the selling company...

Hell, i had a graphics card replaced twice within 10 days once. And it later even turned out, that it was me who fried them (it appeared to me, when i saw the blue electric charge zipping around my 1-to-3-power adapter, which was totally at the end of its live-span). I got it replaced without any fuss, and they even told me, if another replacement would be needed, they´d fire the guy who assembles their comps (for whom i felt i bit bad afterwards ).

I have bought a lot from both EB (as well as when it was Babbages years ago) and Best Buy, never any problems, in fact, Best Buy is awesome, bring it in, walk away with a smile.

Well, I just reacted to your "someone please correct me if this is wrong" request

To be true, some electronic stuff shops here in denmark tries to sell additional insurance when you buy HW - a simple scowl usually quiets them

I do have to say that the camera shop I worked for had a decent protection plan.

If the device failed for any reason within the time period except for theft or fire, it would be repaired or replaced with no charge and no hassle.

Run over your camera with a car? Done.

Go rock climbing and your camera bounces down the mountain? Taken care of.

Go sailing and fall overboard with digicam in hand? Not a problem.

Changing film while flying and get airsick? Eww. But we'll deal.

Broken devices are taken to the local store for the policy, so I saw both ends of the plan in action. It was occasionally a problem for the store, but never for the customer.

My manager sometimes got former cameras that had become bags of parts, and I personally knew the poor girl who had to handle the airsick case.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Just asked my stepson, he buys games at Gamestop quite regularly, he's never been offered a protection plan.

He says, "If it doesn't work, I take it back and they replace it."

              ACK!

I usually just laugh when they ask... they quiet down real quick.

I love when they try to sell you a protection package for 10 bucks on a product that costs only 10 bucks.

When I bought my laptop a couple of months ago, the Futureshop salesman tried to convince me to pay about 80-100$ to have them install the OS. I mean, WTF?

Doesn't that usually come preinstalled ?

And Windows did come preinstalled. I have no idea what they were planning to install.

Well, next time try playing a little stupid and ask into what they are going to do - could evolve into a quite interesting conversation

No, believe it or not, I came up with it independently. But I did go back and click the link to find out WTF you were talking about, so you can claim that victory.
