No. McCain was screwed. The problem was that either he would alienate the GOP base or the independents. There was no way for McCain to get both this election.

Yep... and when you can't get both, you lose elections. If you go for independants, the base abandons you and they are the ones who knock on doors, call people to get out to vote, and give money. And, of course, you can't win without indep votes.

I would have respected him more if he had done it while it still involved political sacrifice. He started to pull back from the brink at the end, but he engaged in some questionable tactics for a while there.

I would have never voted for McCain in a hundred years but during his concession speech I still felt for the guy.

The rumor during the convention was that McCain had fully decided on Lieberman for his Veep, but the party insisted on Palin.

I wonder how differently this campaign would have gone with Lieberman as his number 2. A bi-partisan ticket. I wonder also if there will be a lot of finger pointing on this issue in the weeks to come.

And I liked when Obama reached out to those who didn't vote for him. Maybe this is the beginning of the end of the partisan hydrophobic-visciousness that's been plaguing Washington for years now.

This has actually been the most irritating aspect of the campaign with both sides so god damn fearful of the label of negative campaigning. Given the way the political winds were blowing McCain should have gone negative much earlier (I'll never understand why he killed ads featuring Wright early in the campaign for instance) and not the baby taps he did so late in the campaign.
