Hey DD, which country are you going to move to now?

        Ha ha.

Look, the major parties are such that they could nominate a rock and get ~40% of the vote. I don't know if McCain/Lieberman would have done better or worse than McCain/Palin, but no way they'd have gotten under 40%.

I agree that Joe the Senator wouldn't have whipped up the base, but he also wouldn't have alienated moderates.

Actually, Lieberman was probably the only way McCain could have won. Lieberman is rather popular with the FOX news types, and McCain could have wooed the independents with his maverickiness.

But as somebody already mentioned, the loss wouldn't just be in the base staying home and yada yada, but more importantly that the fundies are the only ones enthusiastic enough to get out there door-knocking, calling, etc. to boost turnout. The independents Lieberman would have taken from Obama probably wouldn't have made up for the number of non-votes.
            Unbelievable!

Yeah, but he is also popular with the GOP base.

Only in terms of being the Dem they like on national security. They'd hate when they heard he's in favor of reversing the Bush tax cuts, pro-choice, pro-gay rights, etc.

Please quit digging that hole as it is quite obvious that you have no real idea what you are talking about here. The man is a staunch democrat who except for a few of his policy positions (namely the fact that he is one of the few Dem hawks on national security) isn't going to be at all acceptable to the GOP base. They would have stayed home or voted 3rd party in the face of such a ticket.

Liebermann on the ticket may have resulted in the creation of a religious right 3rd party for this election.

When a VP pick has negatives much higher than positives you know something's off.
No, you don't. VPs have traditionally served as the attack-dog of the campaign while the nominee stands clear of the fray. Biden served exactly this role for Obama. It's hardly shocking that a VP nominee like Palin who was engulfed in a media feeding frenzy whilst carrying out her designated role in attacking Obama might end up with higher negatives than positives.

The truly puzzling thing about Palin is that she actually seemed to have an effect on how a great number of people chose to vote; I'm not sure a VP nominee has ever done this before. To a large extent, the election became Obama v Palin in a battle of the lightweights...
