Racism can be justified. I'm not talking about petty personal experiences like some black guy giving you the stink eye or something. I'm saying that if, for 2/3 of their life, you were regarded as a second class citizen, politically disenfranchised, and segregated from your fellow citizens because of your skin color... well that would make you a racist.

Alternatively, when I was a kid one of my neighbors was an elderly vet who was incredible racists towards the Japanese because he spent to majority of the war in a POW camp. I could never understand what he went through during the war. Yeah, racism isn't a good thing but I can understand why people are racist.

It does show the extemism in the position though, that black people are racist because they don't trust white people as much as blacks. He can't understand that even confronted with a black person who's parent was a slave.

I had one of those funny old coots living on my block too. He was a WW2 vet who would say all sorts of strange racist crap against Asians but oddly he was married to a Japanese woman. Even as a kid I thought it was weird.

A lot of blacks think that a black president will be better than all the white presidents that we've had because he's black, that he's going to stand up to the man or something. That's why they really support Obama.

I would say that she's racist because she's voting for him since he's black
A point which everyone should realize from reading the article, but on the eve of 2008 election Democratic partisans have brainwashed themselves to the point of celebrating discrimination while, at the same time, using the label "racism" so arbitrarily to white people who disagree with them that it doesn't really mean anything anymore.

              Forum consensus
It's not racist if black people do it
well, obviously y'all will turn ignorant racism into a good thing by attacking rah instead of what he said

Racism can be justified because blah blah vague white guilt

Seriously though, why aren't you banned? Half of your posts are overt "lol i'm better than you, you're stupid and shag sheep, **** you"s these days (dialogue with Oerdin in this thread is a good example).

Ok, oh great thinkers. At what point is racism acceptable. Doing the math here. The woman was born in 1899 or so. While here father was born into slavery, he was not a slave at the time and she was not either. While she has lived (even conservatively 2/3 of her life under segragation, she has lived 1/3 of it during a more enlightened period. (even as to the point of the article, that even a black man is running for president) If this women is racist and passing her belief to the next generation, this is not acceptable to me.
I saw the racism of the previous generation and promised that I wouldn't pass it on. While I'll admit that while my father did a pretty good job, he wasn't perfect. You are the role model for your children. If they see you acting racist, they will think it's ok.

And yes, my first post was more joking while trying to make the point that I don't really think that since she's voting for Obama is anything big since she's voted consistently democrat all of her live. If it was hillary she'd still be voting for her and we'd be hearing that she's thrilled to be voting for a woman. But you guys are sooooo defensive.

Heck even I voted for Clinton on his second term. (of course some may say that this didn't count as voting for a dem since he was really a republican. )

And no, I don't think the woman is a racist that taught her kids to be also. (at least I hope not)

And unlike others, I hope she's voting in 2012 but has finally seen the light by then. Not THAT LIGHT.

Please point out where in my post I justify "white guilt"? Did you miss the second part where I said where I understood why an elderly white veteran was racist against Japanese?

All I tried to convey was I could understand why some people can be racist.

Any black person voting republican at any point in the last 70 years would have been voting against their best interests so she has voted sensibly.

White guilt is the only rationalization I can come up for a white person celebrating black racism.

                              you're redefining your thesis.

My message was that ignorant and counter-productive discrimination based on race (aka racism) is never justified. You can understand it, in the same way you can understand Stalin: by understanding the motivations, fears and the background of the person who acts irrationally.

The definition of racism you are using is simplistic at best.

Most people marry individuals of their own race - is this an inherent sign of a racial bias when people chose mates? Yes. Is all racial bias equivalent? NO.

Racism as a negative force in society would be to say that a candidate is inherently unqualified to do something or be smething because of race. To have two individuals you think are qualified to lead and then chose because you have a preference for one race over the other is NOT the same thing, because in the end some form of bias has to come in when chosing.
