How about a more thorough knowledge of the guns that come in to this country, perhaps by putting a bit more financial support into our Coast Guard. Better knowledge of those who solicit guns is needed. This can come as a result of better regulation.

Still won't work. You need a fascist-level of border control/monitoring to prevent new outside weapons getting in, but that's not the only way criminals get guns. There's this little thing called "stealing." Works pretty well and can be a real headache for law enforcement trying to tie guns used in crimes to actual users as opposed to their legitimate owners.

Of course I would like to see what his previous convictions were for. But if he goes from non-violent felon pre-incarceration to violent felon post-incarceration, what does that say about America's jails? And is there a way to fix it?

I'm not sure it says anything directly about America's jails, but rather the mental health care it provides (or doesn't). If he was truly non-violent until now and truly suffered from ptsd from having been robbed and shot, he didn't receive the mental health care he needed. Again, we don't know enough about his background. PTSD would have been mentioned in court if his shooter had been identified and caught. We don't know if this guy even served time to begin with for any of his drug convictions. I imagine he has but we don't know. Make no mistake here, no one is argue he SHOULDN'T see time for this murder.

On this, we totally agree. I remember DinoDoc *****ing about how you don't rehab prisoners, you punish them. But does that really help, or does it harm, society in general, especially regarding non-violent felons, if that is the case here?

Well, Michael Moore touched on this in SiCKO when discussing the health care received on a prison island in Scandinavia. All manner of violent and non-violent convicts there behaving themselves in a community of convicts and their guards, living almost normal lives, even free to leave the island under conditions. The rehabilitation was a side point to the health care in the movie, but it impressed me and made me wonder if we could dig a trench around Texas and replicate the same successes.

The US is a source of illegal guns in both Canada and Mexico. Not the other way around.
