    • I cannot shirk the feeling, as I watch him rise, that I am witnessing not so much the triumph of a cause as the success of a plan.

        • I thought you were saying that he was an ultraleftist ideologue.

          • Wrong thread?
It fits in with what I was saying earlier about Obama's plan to achieve higher office. His campaign for "hope" and "change" just rings so hollow.

            • The rest of the article discusses Obama's pragmatism. It is fair to use a quote if it sums up your feelings about a matter, even if the author of the quote disagrees with your conclusions, but I think you're engaging in a bit of conspiracy think to suggest that Obama's a dangerous radical who's been miming a moderate Democrat.

My bad, I thought you were quoting polytubbie and responding with the link until I read the article.

Where is the NYT one that tackled the issue more directly?

I never claimed to agree with the rest of the article. It's not surprising that I would disagree with someone who supports universal healthcare and an interventionist foreign policy. I just found it interesting that someone who's the complete political opposite from me would have felt the same nagging doubts about the sincerity of Obama's campaign.

                  • That reason, the fact that McCain gives more tax cuts to the wealthy, and the fact that Obama isn't trustworthy/American are the only reasons I have heard for people voting for McCain.

I think that all the reasons but the tax cuts is silly, and the tax cuts are short sighted... it is already very good for the wealthy in this country, the country can't survive it getting better for them.

                      Mmm, cherry picking.

You left out his military service, "maverick," and his wanting to stay in Iraq until victory.

                        • And Obama's lack of experience. And Obama's views on trade.

                          • I haven't heard those reasons in person.

Do they? How do you explain McCain, then? He was, by all conventional wisdom, hated by the base. Ann Coulter and Limbaugh blasted him repeatedly.

In either party, it's not written in stone that the base get what it wants.

Besides, I think the GOP base is going to severely fracture after this election. The Neocons are already blaming Palin for the loss, while the Theocons will blame McCain.
