        Book Description
"This is not a book about the decline of America, but rather about the rise of everyone else." So begins Fareed Zakaria's important new work on the era we are now entering. Following on the success of his best-selling The Future of Freedom, Zakaria describes with equal prescience a world in which the United States will no longer dominate the global economy, orchestrate geopolitics, or overwhelm cultures. He sees the "rise of the rest"—the growth of countries like China, India, Brazil, Russia, and many others—as the great story of our time, and one that will reshape the world. The tallest buildings, biggest dams, largest-selling movies, and most advanced cell phones are all being built outside the United States. This economic growth is producing political confidence, national pride, and potentially international problems. How should the United States understand and thrive in this rapidly changing international climate? What does it mean to live in a truly global era? Zakaria answers these questions with his customary lucidity, insight, and imagination.

But you are right, you do have the right to voice your opinion that you think that a man reading a book by a well-known journalist about the changes happening out there in the world is not what an American should look for in a possible President.

Sorry Sloww, but your statement regarding that picture was outright stupid.

Either you didn't know what the book is about and you made a knee-jerk silly statement, or you know what the book is about and appear like a fan of the "Know nothing" movement.

And as Boris said, everyone can have an opinion, but they are most certainly not alwasy of equal value.

I guess Sloww never read Catcher in the Rye because he had no interest in some guy playing baseball in a wheat field.

You don't want a constitutional scholar/12 year college professor of constitutional law/state senator/united states senator leading because he read a book you don't agree with? I don't know about you but I read books of those whose opinions I don't share, because you know... there is always more to learn. Or, you can learn just how crazy they are.

Lets have Palin lead the executive, she can't name a newspaper she reads.

A president who is well read, is a plus for me.

A texan, make a knee-jerk statement? I've never heard of such a thing.

But really, of everyone I've heard who supports McCain, Sloww by far has the dumbest reasons.

Interesting point I saw mentioned on a blog:

McCain has been in the right-wing bubble for too long during his campaign and is too used to having town-halls and whatnot that were pretty much all composed of right-wingers. Because of this he brought up a couple points that most right-wingers know about but didn't explain them in a way that the average undecided voter would understand.

For example with his air quotes about the "health" of the mother in the abortion arguement withou explaining what he meant. His obvious point was is the claim that people on the left have stretched the "health of the mother" exception for late-term abortions that pretty much any person who really wants a late term abortion can get one by making up BS reasons about "mental anguish" or something and because of this late term abortions are being stealth legalized. Not an argument I really agree with, but an argument that makes sense. He just air quoted "health" as if everyone knows the whole argument and didn't bother explaining it.

Same with the nuclear issue. The way he talked was the it was a "fringe position" to care about nuclear safety plants being safe. What he obviously meant is that opponents of nuclear power plants will claim that nuclear power is unsafe no matter what so we can't let them get away with keeping nuclear power plants from being built since the critics will never be satisfied and will keep bringing up safety concerns no matter how safe nuclear power become. Again, this argument makes some form of sense, but McCain didn't make the argument he just mentioned the argument and seemed to assume the listener knew about it already and agreed with him.

Same with vouchers, he didn't really make a case for them he just seemed to assume that the listener already knew that voucher = competition = good.

Anyone else notice this? Obama seemed much more focused on explaining the reasons behind his arguments and didn't assume that the listener already knew about the, which made him a bit boring at times, but probably more effective.

It's not that. It's that Sloww had no idea what the book was even about. He was, erm, judging the book by its cover.

I'd have made the same assumptions seeing that book title. Some SOB glad at every bit of trouble that comes the way of the US. There's enough such around.

I would have made the opposite assumption. That it is about the causes of America's declining power and prestige. Which is in fact, the correct assumption.

You know, if you know the cause of a problem, it helps to solve it.... except for global warming of course, govenor palin reminded us that we should not waste our time arguing about the causes .

Liberal propaganda; they photoshopped out the over-sized icecream cone each candidate was given after the debate.

You can clearly see Obama admiring its girth(and presumably wondering if he could take the whole thing in his mouth, McCain is far more conservative in that respect.)
