To be fair, the NDP did manage to poach Outremont, the adjacent very similar riding (in terms of previous breakdown) in a by-election.

So you're actually claiming that a smart person can not communicate because of things like this?

That was a case of liberal infighting. Too many of them sat on their hands. They'll get it back.

            Not certain.

The riding went to Thomas Mulcair, a former provincial environment minister, who resigned and joined the NDP after the PM's decision to sell a national park to private promoters.

He's still very popular and respected. BTW, I'm voting for him.

Can an intelligent person communicate with people who use improper grammar?

I'll add it to the list of ridings to watch.

I hear Fortier is going to lose. Again.

                  Yes.

That person asks in return something like: "two years ago, or now?"

The other person is expected to give a precision, not to repeat the same ambiguous question.

                    Kid -

It isn't a measure of his intelligence. It's his ability (or lack thereof) to communicate effectively in english. Dion is a smart enough man but he is still weak when speaking in english. Bad grammar does not help the situation. Given more time to learn the nuances of english he would be better able to handle this situation. Knowing this, a good interviewer would have rephrased his question.

This isn't an endorsement of Dion on the political front however. The RoC is generally forgiving of french canadians when it comes to language skills (Chretien being a prime example) as I think Quebeckers are of anglos speaking french. Harper had language issues two elections ago and had a hard time getting his message out. His french is much improved (so I am told) and so is his position in the province. Dion simply cannot be understood at times and it is a requirement for the job that the citizenry be able to understand you when you speak.

That's why I asked if he has trouble with English. Because blaiming this on bad grammar is absurd since the question was asked in context. Beforehand the interviewer repeated what Dion has said.

His english is almost as bad as my french. Yes, he has serious trouble. He does a passable job when using a teleprompter or prepared text but doesn't do at all well without.

If only the Prime Minister just had to read off teleprompters to do his job...
