True. McCain is still a hack even down 8.

And apparently Republican strategist Ed Rollins, who just now on CNN pointed out that despite McCain's words today, he must have initially okayed this line of attack on Obama. He was dismayed that this was "not the McCain" he had come to respect in the past. And David Gergen also agreed. Damn those partisan hacks!

There currently going through the seven stages of grief. Right now they're at anger but pretty soon they'll slip into depression and finally acceptance.

They've already done denial and bargaining.

                  • How long will Obama have left to work with a Democratic majority congress?

Also will he be a Carter or a Clinton?

McCain obviously okayed "a" line of negative attacks wrt Obama's judgment (e.g. Ayers), but the people in that crowd that booed were the fringe loons who buy into the chain emails, rumors, and outright assumptions that Obama's a Muslim, Arab, terrorist infiltrator, closet commie, etc., and that kind of nonsense is what he tried to tone down, not his own campaign themes. Surely you're not suggesting McCain "okayed" those rumors also...
                      Unbelievable!

McCain & Palin have personally been playing up Obama's allegedly "palling around" with a "terrorist." They've said as much directly on the stump. They have pushed the line that Obama "isn't like us." What the hell should they expect from crap like that?

Before they started pushing these memes themselves, there weren't any such incidents documented at their rallies. And those chain e-mails, rumors, etc. have been circulating for months. So I don't think it's a coincidence that these examples of extreme behavior came out after McCain and Palin launched their new tactics.

Did they want those precise things to happen? I doubt it, but you reap what you sow. By engaging in a particularly divisive kind of character attack, they are definitely enablers of this venom. And it wouldn't have taken a rocket scientist to predict their attacks were going to get extremists whipped up--in fact, many on the left were saying just that.

However, I am willing to bet that if these attacks had moved the polls in McCain's direction, we wouldn't have heard those admonishions from him that we did yesterday.

I'm no fan of McCain, and certainly not of those comments, but I'm still fair enough to admit that they're intended to make people question his judgment by raising questionable past choices as examples.

Now, if a few ignorant redneck ***holes independently extrapolate from that to think that Obama actually is a terrorist, or even sympathizes with terrorism, no, I do not hold McCain responsible for their stupidity.

You can't suppose that every mainstream candidate and every extremist supporter is permanently attached at the hip, and that applies to both sides. For instance, if Obama tomorrow drew a few interesting parallels between the McCain voting record's past attitudes toward habaeus corpus to laws in 1930s Germany, would I blame Obama because some idiots on the far left subsequently call McCain McHitler and march around Berkeley burning moustached effigies? Nope, I'd blame the idiots.

I don't understand what you're arguing about. What I'm saying is that McCain engaged in smear politics, and the response was more than he bargained for--but utterly predictable. What would anyone think would happen when you accuse your opponent of being a terrorist-by-association in front of right wing crowds? But even then he didn't attempt to clamp down on it until it had been going on for over a week. I'm therefore not inclined to give him much credit for his statements yesterday, because they appear to be a response to the political blowback.

His campaign was officially defending the rallies and accusing Obama of attacking McCain's supporters up until yesterday!

That tells me all I need to know.
