That was a long time ago. Repealing the Corn Laws created a great manufacturing sector in England when other countries didn't have one, which gave England a great advantage.

Right now free trade is great for China, but it's killing the US.

a) Even if "they" don't do it too it is still of net benefit to the people living in the country which drops the barriers.

b) The attitude that your own trade barriers provide a useful negotiating tool in attempting to reduce the trade barriers of others, thus unilateral reductions in tariffs actually delay full free trade is the reason why it has taken so long to reduce trade barriers to the point they're at today.

c) Of particular amusement to me is the anger of any country at the subsidization by a foreign country of the production of goods and services which the first country imports.
