  • Welcome to 1996, y'all. Greenspan has just given a great speech about "irrational exuberance."

53% off the highs. Probably didn't know how brave you would have to be when I said some time ago that bravery pays.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

          • In a sign of how the world has been stood on its head, Google now is worth well more than GE.

              • Is GE worth anything? Its stock sure is creating a hole in the Earth. Down to $75 billion in market capitalization. The market is punishing those with high debt levels.

                • Watching GE bite the dust is mesmerizing. The bluest of blue chip companies is down 85% from its highs and it's off 11% this morning.

I'm somewhat tempted to try to catch the falling knife. Uncle Sam wouldn't let GE fail, would it?

What would Obama do if he let MSNBC go off the air? The real question you should be asking is why the shareholders haven't ousted Immelt yet given his performance.

                        • I don't have any money either, really -- only my regular monthly savings. It's too bad, because most of these prices are excellent, if you stay away from financials, basic materials, and energy. Or you could just buy the whole index and sleep well at night.

The trailing twelve month dividend yield on the S&P 500 is 4.05%, while the announced future yield is 3.31%. The announced yield probably will go lower, but it's still well above the 10-year treasury yield of 2.89%. As discussed earlier in this thread, this happens very rarely -- not in a half century. The spread between the two is insane.

                          • A lot of people I go to school with work at GE. Beginning of last year they were all "my company rocks, you suck" and now they are all "crap"... it's kind of funny for me. Now if only P&G would bite the dust... not really, this all sucks.

I have a GM under warrenty, but I still would like to see them go bankrupt and force all those union members to find a job where you actually have to work!

                            • bah... it's as low already as I thought it will go...

there simply is no floor... IMO so low levels are early... and going further down is unrealistic even for panic selling... but who is talking about realism here

                              • GE closed at $6.66 yesterday.

I agree, OFITG. This is already the worst post-war bear market in the US. Now 57% off the highs. If it falls much further, it will be the worst bear market since the great crash.

In any event, these are all excellent prices at which to invest, remembering that after the '37 to '42 bear market, the stock market returned 150% in the next four years.
