I thought the world was going to explode if we didn't pass the bill though? How can this be?

The bill is a lie. It's not needed. It won't help anything, just put a bigger burden on the average American taxpayer.

You're not. It's just that the building is falling as fast as, or faster than, you are.

Agreed. Stocks go up and down all the time.

We do need to shovel over $700 bn to keep the credit market open and to keep the economy moving.

By the way, when we shoveled over $3 bn back in 1933 to do, essentially, the same thing, the government ended up making a slight profit.

And a lot of Americans did not have the houses foreclosed upon because of FDR's creation of the "Home Owners Loan Corp," which bought up the loans and refinanced them.

Which brings up the point of what else could be done with $700bn. During the Great Depression they could have done something else with the $3bn also.

btw, do you have a source for your info on the depression bailout?

We aren't going to be buying up loans and refinancing. We are going to be buying up the bad investments...

People are still focused on the loans, that has little to do with what is going on here.

The mortgage backed securities... which could (and probably will) end up making the government more than $700B

In 10 years or so maybe. If you count interest on the debt I'm sure they won't break even.
