Space, you could earn 5 an hour by typing captchas for spammers. In the business this tedious job is usually done by Indians who believe 5 dollars is a fortune, but if you really have nothing on your hands at the moment it's a decent alternative

Unless by now the Indians have become too expensive and Bengali or even cheaper labour has taken over the market.

You could do some volunteer work for an NGO or somesuch and get to know a few people here and there. Very often they have contacts all over the place and can help you get a full-time job.

Here's something that might make you feel better, or at least sort of commiserate:

I've been searching for well over a year now. I have a BA and graduated with honors, but it's in English. More importantly, I have no formal work experience and don't know how to drive (now learning). I just throw my resume repeatedly at Craigslist several times a week, looking for places in Metro range. I've been doing it all this time, and it ain't gonna work with our current unemployment rate, but there really doesn't seem to be much more for me to do.

So I'm hoping I can finish my novel and publish it. Well over halfway finished now, with 215 pages. I think.

IF we wanna have a misery contest here's my entry.

I graduated from Michigan State with honors in Accounting. I was a Controller, an I/T manager and a Director of Operations for a major corporation. I owned my own sign manufacturing company and sold it in February. With over 20 years of experience, a degree and a pretty good resume I haven't been able to find a job in the Detroit area for over 9 months now. In fact I have only had 1 interview.

You could move like I did. Well you probably don't want to leave your family, but working sucks dude.

Also, don't you live in Texas. There are jobs in the Oil and Gas industries. That's what people from there tell me anyway. They pay pretty well actually.

Do you like to work hard? You should be able to go down to the daily labor hall and find work depending on the unemployment rate in your area.

Also, people sometimes go hang out as Home Depot in the morning looking for contractors to hire them. This is actually a better way to find a higher paying job, but you might not work everyday.

Anyway, anything is better than getting rent money from family.

What part of the country are you in? A radical step might be to go stay with other family or friends in a more economically active area.

Also, have you given any thought to taking volunteer positions that might put you back in action and perhaps reveal new job opportunities you might not hear or see elsewhere?

Have you written a skills resume? Also, have you posted your resume on Careerbuilder or Monster?

Dunno what you mean by skills resume, but I tried Monster quite early and now ignore everything I get from them. A third spam, a third scams, and the rest jobs I'm not qualified for (posted under the wrong category). I suppose I could try Careerbuilder, but after the spam Monster unleashed on my e-mail account I'm reluctant.

Finish that book early at 220 pages (have the lead die unexpectedly) and change branch.

Why are you unskilled? You can use a computer and can obviously navigate a bus system.

Have you tried temp agencies? At least to get skills

How about co-ops or internships? Temp to hires?

Send me the info - I would definitely appreciate it.

You, or she, can email me at ramilhizer@yahoo.com or you can pm me if you feel that is a better route to go. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And BTW I am willing to relocate anywhere. I'll just send the checks home so I hopefully don't lose the house. It would definitely be embarrassing to move in with mom with my family in my 40's.

I think if I lose my job, I'll try and buy me a brush hog and just mow rural land. Hell of a lot less stress.

This is a good idea if it's available. Temp agencies mostly get crap-tacular workers, so anybody who can use a computer and communicate like an adult is considered a star applicant.
