Not quite right - it's El Presidente del Gobierno wich isn't the same as US President.

Are you saying that Texas needs allies against the other US states ?

No, only that they don't need "stinkin'" allies. Texans already smell bad enough

            Israel is a useless ally.

I see you edited the first part out .

I was about to talk about it. Listening to the clip, I can say its not as bad as I thought it was. Originally he thought she was talking about Mexico (as it seemed they were talking about Latin America and confused "Zapatero" with "Mexico" or "Zapatistas", which are the rebels in Chiapas). After she clarified she was talking about Spain, McCain obviously decided to dance around the question (and seemed to mean it as a slight) ... it seems residual fallout from the pullout from Iraq.

Yes McCain obviously made a Gaff, that kind of thing happens all the time (especially for him). The part I find cynical of him is that he's going to just let this diplomatic Slap in the face to land on Spain rather then acknowledge his mistake.

Well if Bush has an icy relationship with Spain I doubt he has gone to the point of actually articulating a policy like the one McCain just did. A casual and diplomatic 'not able to find time out of your busy schedule' is how you would expect both leaders to express an icy relationship. Allowing public statements which basically says a NATO ally has to "earn" a meeting with him is beyond icy, its an open and public rebuke.

I expect Obama to hammer McCain on this with some rhetoric along the lines of "McCain is so anti-diplomacy he won't even agree to meet with our with our NATO allies."

At least when I lived there, Spaniards used "El Presidente" to refer to the PM. And Zapatero is a dink.

Sounded more like a snub of Zapatero than mere ignorance. Which is worse. Spain has troops in Afghanistan (which, if y'all haven't noticed, we desperately need allies for). Publicly slighting its gov't is not merely pointless and dumb, but significantly counterproductive to our foreign policy (if McCain's elected).

He does get confused a lot.

But I don't think it's digging in heels. I think the Republicans are pissed off at Spain for their policy on Iraq and there needs to be some rapprochement between the two before meetings.
I'd buy it if this ("McCain had made positive remarks towards meeting with him only a few months ago. . .") wasn't the case.

Clearly an error on McCain's part. Just as clearly this will have no effect on the election.
