If the Ulster history provides any solid lessons, it's this-

If you want progress, put the guns down and move the debate to the political arena. I'm firmly convinced that the armed effort only held back the cause of the Catholic communities in Ulster (and didn't help the Proddies either).

And the only people applauding the killers are the deluded and the dumb.

There are no people currently living who remember the Irish famine.

We are. The idea that we are not is something made up by right wing white people to excuse themselves from any responsibility.

There's an idea going around that you are only responsible for things that you do or agree to. That is false. For example, all of us are born as citizens, from which we receive immense benefit. But in so being born we also take on responsibility for what our government does and has done. This counts even if you didn't vote for it. All Americans are responsible for what Bush has done, because the US is a democracy and he's their elected leader.

If a corporation can sustain liability even when ownership is transferred numerous times, then a country can similarly sustain liability. The moral basis of this claim is that we have no right to benefit from the moral inequities of our ancestors.

The UK benefited for centuries from the rape of Ireland.

Whereas, of course, had the many centuries of invasions and counter-invasions not eventually been won by England, then Ireland would be a happy and prosperous unified nation of peace, prosperity, and picturesque leprechaun-hugging love, right?

And not a Gaelic-speaking backwater with no American friends, split into several small states merrily slaughtering each other? Like they always used to?

Incidentally, if the children are responsible for the sins of their ancestors, we really need to kick the Scots out of Scotland and give it back to the Picts.

Right so it's a given that it's all the Brits fault(which historicaly is probably correct), what do you do about the people who live ther who consider themselves British and who's ancestors have lived there for hundreds of years, chuck em out to atone for the sins of their forfathers.

May be that will create some "Lebensraum" for the others.

Don't you post sometimes that it isn't a democracy, or at least that it doesn't work as such? Or does this depend whether it fits to your point or not?

Don't build up your hopes. Aggie might be big on accusations, but practical solutions have rarely featured on the agenda.

Of course they should. We, the white people, are still using their land to make profit, and dominate the rest of the world. What makes you think we have a right to do it? Because we've been doing it for a long time? That's absurd.
