I hate to say it, but Fox News has the best coverage.

I'm amazed that you still have power after a Category 3 storm went right over you.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Dallas didn't get anything of note. I t came right through. Some rain. Not the wind I expected. No tornadoes, which shocked me. We had wind from the north this morning. I figured surely there would be a tornado outbreak hitting Gulf air. Galveston is ****ed. Houston hit hard.

I saw a guy on the news from Galveston that had ridden out Carla. He said Ike was worse. I-45 is covered in debris.

                    • I survived the zombie apocalypse. My car didn't. A large tree fell on it. A tree fell on the house in which I was staying (not mine), and a tree fell on the houses next to it.

After the winds died down, and before the water drained, Houston looked like a tropical swamp.

This has been one of the most surreal experiences in my life.

Probably won't have power for the next week. I'm camping out in my office (which does have power).

My school is claiming that they're going to reopen on Tuesday.

Surfside lived up to its name. The Galveston sea wall did its job. Apparently the surge came in ~ 13-14 feet, so the wall was just a little over topped. The blacktop of Sea Wall Road got chewed up by the overtopping wave action.

Looks like the Polytubbies came through in pretty good shape. Looks like we lost a backyard tree and a car. But no one dead; no one hurt; no one flooded out.

                            • I took some pictures on someone else's camera. Ought to have them up as soon as power is up (which might a while).

                              • Here's one of those things that you never really think about.

Dozens of caskets floated to the surface due to the flood waters caused by Hurricane Ike, including these along a fence line at the Hollywood Community Cemetary in Orange, Texas.
