They're not. They're based on countries being ranked first by Golds, then Silvers, then Bronzes. As the IOC does it. As the IOC has always done.

It's immaterial, however. The bracketed numbers are there as an extra service. Why you chose to create this much confusion over it, I'll never know.

Would Hitler do that? I don't think so.

Also they haven't had any real mass killings since Mao. Now they only run over protesters with tanks now and again, instead of rounding up "class enemies" or racial minorities and sending them to dig their own graves in some godforsaken camp. Most damning of all for your "totalitarian" charge, they have practically abandoned their communist roots and settled for something resembling capitalism. No self-respecting totalitarian allows reality to trump ideology!
China might have projected a surface veneer of Authoritarianism in recent years, however recent events leading up to and including the Olympic games has shown that they still hold Totalitarianism true to their hearts...

I love how everyone is going OMG if we knew how China would be behaving today, we would have never given them the Olympic games! They haven't changed - it is the same old China when push comes to shove...

Sure it is a Totalitarianism that has adapted to disguise itself, but only subtly enough to suck in the gullible and not very bright...
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

I never said that. I said your method of doing that had merit but was not recognized. I also pointed out that the numbers in brackets you referred to as "IOC ranking" was misstatement.

THe IOC doesn't rank and they have never ranked. You are like someone who looks at something that is black and claims it to be white. Then when someone points out it is black you claim they are confusing the situation.

For the last time the IOC never has ranked countries. The IOC does not endorse any 3rd party ranking system. It is against the Olympic Charter for the IOC to rank countries. The IOC only provides data about medal winners. Others take the IOC data and sort it as they please. The IOC does not endorse any of those sorts (i.e. ranks)

Your bracketed numbers are fine, they were just mislabled. In order to avoid confusion I pointed out that they were mislabled. The only confusion here is on your part. You seem to able unable to accept the fact that there is no IOC, "regular" or generally agreed upon rating system.

DD, the IOC does rank them on their website. If they didn't, they'd be listed in random order.

Whether you think this isn't "official" is beside the point. It's how every other country on this planet counts, and it's the common-sense way to do it.

Do you count how many Stanley Cups Detroit has or do you count how many times they finished in the top 3? Athletes Go for the Gold, not for bronze.

                Yes.

But I saw that you'd sneaked in a post ahead of me, and I had no desire to start quoting the one I was responding to. So I mellowed a little.

It's the official website of the games, sanctioned by the IOC. The IOC website itself has nothing on it, because they do nothing.

Every medal tally in the world, except for that of the United States media, uses Gold medals. Period.

Stop your juvenile squirming because it's starting to get embarrassing. You guys finished 2nd to China, get over it.

And yet....not the IOC. Not created or run by the IOC.

You've just reached a personal low on this site. And for what?

It's the Official Website of the Olympic Games. The content it contains is Official.

The IOC themselves don't do anything except take bribes, but the official websites for their games include details like this.

To make the point that there isn't a right way to do it and saying there is a right way to do it is not just foolish but completely against the point of the games?

I don't mind including the total medals first sort order in that statement, too.

Task for Koyaanisqatsi and other stubborn juvenile Americans: Find one international site in the world who is ranking medals by total count and not by gold medals.

I can't believe how ridiculous you guys are being. You're making the claim that officially the IOC doesn't rank any countries by medals. That means any ranking suffices -- maybe Canadian media should rank medals by Bronzes, it'd help us out. You forget that the official records for the game (hosted on the official site for the games) do rank by golds. You also ignore the common sense aspect of it (which is quite typical for Bush's America), which is to rank by victories.

How many NFL teams do you see bragging about how many times they came in either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd?

                                Hello?
