The bigger problem is stuff like swimming, where there is always multiple medal winners. That simply can't happen with soccer, or triathalon, or basketball, etc.

Swimming should dwarf things like BMX racing or Beach Volleyball. The problem is that it also dwarfs things like soccer.

I think it's also interesting to note that despite taking 15 less Gold medals, the United States are right behind China in "total medal value", 220 to 223. Maybe if their Athletics relay teams had, you know, practiced a little bit more on their shifts..

Meh, that's a "value" argument. The fact is that a single really great swimmer is probably going to win multiple medals. You could be the best soccer or basketball or even beach volleyball player in the world - head and shoulders above everyone else - and you can still only win one medal.
