Obviously, I react to all the talk about Russian hardware. Why are you Russians talking about the effects of Russian rockets, when all your complaints are about Western tanks? So get your Naomi Klein books and move it or I'll seriously bash your faces in! - Supercitizen to stupid students

Also, the fact that Saakashvilli called a unilateral cease fire indicates that there had been exchanges of fire prior to August 8. Who fired first?
This Saak's "unilateral cease fire" was a true classic.
He made this statement at TV just hours before the oppening ceremony of the Olympics when his forces already had their orders to attack.
It's a pity that we have been ablle to send weapons to Georgia but not neutral observers.

Wouldn't a fleet generally deploy the support vessles under escort well behind the main body? Is there an actual report of support vessels arriving at the area at the same time as the warships? What is the fast cruising speed of the types of warships deployed to the coast of Georgia on August 9.
No one has yet detailed the types of attacks allegedly staged by the South Ossetians prior to the Georgian attack. Were there in fact civilian casualties? I find it odd that even as the first reports of the beginning of this incident reached the international media the Georgians made reference to attacks by the South Ossetians, but not to civilian casualties inflicted.

I am curious as well to see more details on the shelling that occured before the escalations began. Still, I think a major factor here is that the Russians made no effort or protest to stop them."I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration." - Hillary Clinton, 2003

But you did. There were/are OSCE military observers and the Georgians warned them they are gonna invade the South Ossetia, so they stay away from Tskhinvali. With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

At 16 knots it takes only a little over 22 hours to travel 400 nautical miles. Does the Russin Black Sea Fleet need its support vessels right on the front line when deploying over such a short distance? Furthermore, wouldn't it make sense to deply the support ships well behind the main body of the fleet?
Showing my work:
1 knot = 0.514444444 m/s
1 nautical mile = 18.52 km
16 knots = ~8.23 m/s or 29.632 km/h
400 nautical miles = 740.8 km
740.8 km / 29.632 km/h = 25 h
And I'd assume that they wouldn't want the Georgians doing an end run around the four combat ships and sinking their support vessels, as well as the 4000 troops that the Georgians are saying landed. So they'd have to keep close by.

2. Please don't repeat the outright lie that Iraq in 1991 had anything remotely close to state of the art Soviet hardware. The Soviets never sold their best weapons to clients, anymore than the F-15 and F-16s the US has supplied to KSA and Egypt are equal to ours.

The Russian military is a joke by Western standards by nearly any measure Serb. The only people in the world that don't know it are the Russians.
Given that the US has outspent Russia by at least a factor of 40 over the last 10 years, our military better be damned better than theirs, otherwise we should all demand our money back.If you don't like reality, change it! me
