Hmm, even though my worldview seemed to match up with Carlin's 99% of the time, not once did he ever make me laugh out loud. It wasn't any funnier than someone telling me the sky is blue. Am I weird?
I didn't know the guy so I listened to the excerpts.
I have to agree with you.

I think a good test for a comedian is to basically be strong on some issues and make the people against you laugh about it and like the comedy. That's not easy. I think Carlin pulled it off well. His blue material was also extremely blue, yet it wasn't easy f this and f that.In da butt.

Try some Billy Connolly material.
an introduction.
His routine for 'doctor's test for prostate cancer' is excruitatingly funny.
A lot of brilliant stuff but the material on his later tours was just f this and f that.Last edited by Hercules; June 23, 2008, 20:41.On the ISDG 2012 team at the heart of CiviLIZation

He was just here a second ago...
The man was an iconclast icon, a cunning linguist, a philosopher, a humanist, an originator, an artist, an autodidact, a genius, and a hero. I am terribly sad about this.

Maybe your friend is not getting it.
In this world, things are blatantly obvious - yet people continue to do / think or say stupid things. Carlin, like Connolly and Bill Hicks, are very good at reminding everyone of how stupid people can be and to try and avoid it.

I saw Carlin in 1979 at the Tennessee Theatre in Nashville. He was hilarious! I felt that in later years that he was more politically motivated than just purely anti-establishment and that that hurt his routine, but in the early years he was fantastic.
