It suddenly occurs to me how much fun it would be to write a book about the U.S. in the 20th Century -- "The American Century" -- beginning with the glory of Teddy Roosevelt and ending with the dark spectre of George W. Bush.

American dominance really began in the late 1800s with McKinley's Presidency and the Spanish American War. Keep in mind that the people behind the war would today be considered Neo-Cons and TR was one their leaders. The same things that thrust into the global stage are some of the things that the current administration is being criticized.

At the end of 2000 he wasn't a dark specter. Just a controversy as to whether he was elected or not.

No one knew how bad he was gonna be.

Yes, but the reader will know.

Maybe a good point to be at is where Bush receives advice from the Clintion administration that the biggest threat to America's security is from al Qaeda, and Bush decides to ignore the advice and to pursue his goal of resurrecting our Star Wars missile defense system.

The two are not mutually esclusive, if you are going to write a book at least have it make sense

I say you end it with Clinton guting our human intel programs.

America in the 20th century: I just want to be left alone, but there's commies out there. Would be a good title for some documentary.

I like: Clinton lied and his approval rating went up.

Yes, but we had other interests too, like "kill the Nazis" and "kill the immigrants" (which was sometimes mixed with "kill the commies"). Once the Nazis were gone (dunno where the immigrant-hatred went, I was a sperm at the time), we had only commies to beat up on. Oh, and black people, but that Supreme Court got on our case about it soon after we got rid of the Nazis. Now we've moved on to "kill the Ay-rabs," but rest assured that we'll be coming for you again just as soon as you grow sufficiently in numbers and sophistication to be a halfway-plausible threat. Or if we run out of Ay-rabs.

In order to learn new things, you need genuine interest. While reading about the United States in the 20th Century, keep in mind that it slowly transformed during the hundred years from a regional player in a remote continent into the sole super-power the world, undeniably the most powerful country on earth. What chains of events and developements contributed to this slow transformation, which worked against it? I think it's an interesting question to consider while reading about the subject.

Wikipedia used to be great, but it's been weasel-worded to death so you end up with vague generalities. Here's a nice (left-wing editorial slant) source to start on. Just browse around and read all the relevant links: http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/USA.htm
