  • Largest labour strike in the world averted

Sorry, no blog sources, but I did find this on a reputable news site:

San Diego janitors reach 4-year deal, avoid strike
    The Associated Press
Article Launched: 06/10/2008 06:26:17 AM PDT

SAN DIEGO—Unionized janitors in San Diego have reached a four-year deal that avoids a strike.

The contract negotiated by the Service Employees International Union representing some 2,000 janitors and the janitorial firms calls for pay hikes ranging from $1.20 an hour for downtown janitors and $1 an hour for janitors in the suburbs.

There also are health care improvements in the new contract.

Are you sure it's been avoided?

We won't be sure until we get confirmations from the blogs.

Unfortunately http://janitorwatch.blogspot.com is not working right now. Must be due to traffic load.

Unions need to die. If a janitor is incapable of negotiating his own contract he deserves minimum wage.

You wouldn't think it's funny if your San Diego office needed the trashcans emptied and desks dusted!

I honestly don't know how janitors can maintain a union. I mean it's not like it is a high skilled business.

BTW the blog was just 3 days off on the Hillary thing. She did it on her very next big speech.

Yeah, it was just completely wrong.

Are you ****ing serious? You don't negotiate your contract. You take what they offer you or you don't.

There are janitors out there that actually take pride in their work. Employers are more often than not willing to shell out much more money to keep them (not a great deal more, but let's face it $12 an hour beats the hell out of $5 an hour). Unions prevent the good employees from being recognized. The vast majority of janitors work as janitors because they don't care about anything, they can practically sleep on the job, nobody else will scrub the toilet.

If by completely wrong you mean right but off by a couple of days then yes.

Well the only part I agree with is that $12/hour is better than $5/hour.

I worked as a janitor at a hotel last summer. I was going to leave because my supervisor wouldn't accommodate a schedule change, as I started taking classes that fall. The general manager intervened gave me a dollar an hour pay raise and forced my supervisor to accommodate my schedule so I would stay. So, in my experience what I said is in fact true. Especially the part about most janitors being lazy and not caring about anything.

When your work ethic is above par everyone notices, it doesn't matter what your job is.
