I'm glad to see that you gave it a try, and you seem to be having a good time at it!
I won't offer you anything in the way of character development advice, save for this: Let the types of stories you're involved in inform your choices. Not only will it help the character come more fully alive, but your decisions will all acquire an internal consistency that will make your character's story that much more compelling, and focus on your character's story. His motivations, trials, tribulations, deepest desires, failings....for me, the magic has always been in creating memorable characters and then putting them in memorable stories. Everything else is...meh.
Of course, this from the guy who doesn't usually even let his players see their own stats, so take it with a grain of salt...

(fond memories of a woodsman character of mine who failed to protect the life of someone he was sworn to guard....he turned to the drink after that, and that one weakness became the basis for a whole series of adventures, temptations, failures, and finally, redemption...good stuff... )
